Will a 2004 TL key fob work for a 2008 Type-S?

When I bought my 2004 TL, the dealer only had one key/fob for it, so I bought an OEM fob on ebay and programmed it for the car. Shortly afterwards, the dealer found the second one, so I have three fobs for the 04. My 2008 Type-S only has one fob. Can a 2004 fob be re-programmed to work in the 2008? I have searched around and gotten conflicting answers. Thanks.

Also, obviously I need to know if a 2004-06 key would work, as well.

If you search around here I think I remember reading a thread back in 2017 on the subject. If I recall correctly, the 2007-2008 TLs were different and the remotes were not compatible. IIRC, the key blade is different as well.

Thanks horseshoez. I figured that that was the case, but I have seen listings for 3G TL remotes that list 2004-2008, and others that split it up.

the unlock/lock/trunk can be programmed but not the key itself since it's a different shape.

if this is the case, then I don't see any issue why the OP couldn't program a remote from the 04-06 TL, and just get a stand alone generic key cut with a transponder inside (maybe a place that clones his current transponder) and use that combination.

However, I'm not sure how much the switchblade keys go, but it may be better for the OP to just get another switchblade style key for his TL Type S.

That's what I would like to do. I don't care for the switchblade-type remote

LOL, I thought I was the only human on the planet who preferred the old fashion separate fob and key.

I really liked my switchblade until I installed remote starter. Having switchblade and extra remote was too much.

Would it be less about style of fob and more about the frequency the fob runs on?
