Whinning?
Has anyone yet experienced a very annoying whinning sound coming from under the hood? (It actually sounds as if I was supercharged) sound increases with acceleration.
I have taken it to the dealer to get checked one said it was the power steering pump which was replaced (didn't fix a damn thing).
Another dealer said the alternator I will have to look further into this, as i have no idea what is going on with this car.
anyone else experiencing this problem or have experienced it help me out, if not them comments or questions are greatly appreciated.
thanks again guys.

i seem to have the same thing. note that it is not a major issue for me but will probably ask the foreman to check it out.
here's another similar post:

no aftermarketr mods except for rims and springs. although it happens when i accelerate, i've also tested it when i put it in neutral; there is a distinct and constant 'whizzing' or 'wining' sound coming from the passenger side of the engine.

I think I am having the same problem. When I am in 3rd gear, I hear a low humming sound and feel it through the auto transmission knob between 28-35 MPH. This sound occurs during both acceleration and braking. I'm having it checked out on Friday morning. Will keep you posted.

Nope.
The only whining I've experienced is about rattles.
Now, if we can only get *those* people to stop posting, I wouldn't hear any whining.

Hey the whining noise happened to my 04TL too. Took it in to the dealer 2 weeks ago and discovered it to be the idler pulley (bearing) as well. Replaced it last week and problem solved.
Btw, the power steering pump, alternator, A/C pump are all on the same belt, which I'm told has at least 2 idler pulleys. This explains why replacing dv8ing's power steering pump didn't solve the problem...they simply misdiagnosed the problem due to it's proximity to the bad idler pulley...they should have further investigated before they changed out the pump...
But glad you got your probelm fixed...
However, after replacing the idler pulley, I seem to be getting worse gas mileage...commuting to work I usually get 32mpg @ 70mph average, but after the pulley change, I get 28-29mpg...a significant reduction! It's like turning on the A/C on my commute.
..could they have tensioned the belt excessively thus causing more friction in the system, which leads to poorer gas mileage? Any one else observe this or am I imagining it? I guess I can call the dealership and pose this question to them.
Thanks in advance.

My 04TL began making the whizzing/spinning noice last week, and this thread's helped me. Took my car to the dealer this morning, suggested they inspect the idle pulley, and just got a call back saying that they discovered the "drive belt tensioner" to be bad (which is the same thing, I presume). They said now the noise is gone, and I'll be picking up the car later.
I guess quite a number of TLs suffer from this bad tensioner problem. I had 30300 mi on the meter.

more (excessive) tension on the belt would not affect fuel mileage, as all the components have bearings at the pulley ends. it might theoretically cause premature failure of one of the bearings in one or more components. there should be no belt slipping (an absence of friction?) at all.
if there was friction (slipping), something (ps, ac, alternator?) would not be working as effeciently as designed. this condition would theoretically give better fuel mileage.
more likely someone test drove your car a tad more aggressively, or let it idle through a few fan temp cycles, thereby affecting mileage.

No, I took the gas mileage reading on a new tank of gas, so noone influenced my reading. However I have no issues with it now that I've changed the oil and filter...it was on the end of its life anyhow...I'm back to 32-33mpg now.

Yeah it would be pretty cool sound if not for knowing that the added friction from the bearings will adversely affect your mpg, but I know you were just kidding...good luck with it.
