what is this noise? HQ sound clip inside

havent gotten to the dealer yet but i took a much better video of this noise coming from my timing belt area. only happens after the engine is warm.

my other 2 threads about this problem with some more info
https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-problems-fixes-114/rubbing-grinding-noise-timing-belt-area-idle-757207/
https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-problems-fixes-114/sloshing-splashing-noise-engine-bay-sounds-like-water-engine-sound-clip-757141/

its 1 minute long. you can hear it better about 20 seconds into the vid so please listen to the whole thing if you can. the louder your speakers the better you can isolate the noise im referring to. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING

It could be one of two things:
1. Timing belt tensioners.
2. The water pump bracket may be loose resulting in vibration of the water pump.
Listen to the engine at idle from inside the car. Preferably with the car in gear. If you hear this sound predominantly then it is probably the water pump.
If you hear it worse on a cold start which then gets better it is the timing belt tensioner. Either way warrants a visit to the stealership. GL

thanks man. 105k service was done about a month ago but this noise appeared about 2 weeks ago. something may have come loose like you suggested.

this noise ONLY happens after the car is at normal operating temperature. it doesn't happen on a cold start.

i can faintly hear the noise when the car is in park or in drive from inside the cabin with the windows closed but ONLY after the car is warm

Service Bulletin 08-031 addresses this issue. There's a taper shim kit the needs to be installed to stop the timing belt tensioner from tilting down. I had my TL fixed as soon as the bulletin came out in June of 2008. It applies to all 2005 to 2007 TLs. Hope this helps.

i was thinking the same thing but i have an 04. i dont see how an 04 is any different from an 05 but who knows. im thinking that maybe the dealer used parts for a newer tl when they changed my timing belt since its the same part numbers for 04-08

i have the same exact noise and while in drive u cant really hear it but in park and neutral it sounds just like this.... i took it to the dealer and according to them they performed that tsb on my TL but to really believe them i dont know since the noise is still there... i just gave up, im kinda tired of proving something to the dealer. I didnt have any noticeable problems due to the noise.

Also sounds like a worn bearing/pully.

these were the items changed on my 105k service.

38920-RCA-A03 BELT, COMPRESSOR 04 - 08 TL
14400-RCA-A01 BELT, TIMING 04 - 08 TL
19200-RDV-J01 WATER PUMP 05 - 09 RL
14520-RCA-A01 TENSIONER, 04 - 08 TL

since the noise only happens when in park or neutral and NOT drive or reverse, does that raise any flags on what might be the problem? idler pulley?

well you guys were right. the dealer said its the timing belt pulley. thats the timing belt adjuster right?

http://www.acuraoemparts.com/delray/...1=&inputstate=

they want 280 bucks to fix it. is that reasonable? im very pissed because i told them i wanted this and the idler pulley changed when had the 105k service and the rep said thats its not worth it. they originally wanted $350 but after i said that he said $280 "because youve been a good customer"

whats the book time on this job?

The tensioner is completely different than idler pulley. It is actually a hydraulic tensioner, which according to my parts guy; they change out no matter what, and that is usually an long term issue item...

^yea that i understand. they didnt touch the idler pulley. they first said the noise was coming from the timing belt pulley. now my invoice says they changed the serpentine belt tensioner part #04317-RCA-305.

the car is going back tomorrow morning and a tech is going to listen to it when im there. now what do i do...complain that i want this fixed free of charge because they already charged me 300$ to replace something that apparently didnt need to be replaced?

That's up to you. I would ask to pay the difference between the first repair and second repair for the second repair, granted they are similar in cost. But I would not pay full price.

its sounds like the t- belt tentionor.this is what you need to do. take the drive belt off and see if the noise is still there. if it is'nt there then its one of the accessories. if its still there then its the t-belt.

that just the hydrolic part, the bearing is never replaced unless needed.

brought the car to the dealer and had a tech listen to it while the car was hot. he tried to tell me that the noise was normal. so i suggested he grab any 04 tl on the lot and let it idle until it was warm and if that car had the same noise i would leave no questions asked. he stuttered a bit and brought me back into the service advisor.

the tech also said he had the car running without the the drive belt on the car and the noise was still there. i mentioned it may be the t-belt tensioner like 240sx said and he said its not possible because he installed a new one when i had 105k service done. im thinking hes a bone head.

the service advisor set me up for next week with a loaner and they are going to try again. he said they are going to do the whole timing belt job again. i told him i expected money off the next service since they charged me for a part that i did not need plus labor. he said "well work something out"

to be continued...

Man, did they idle the other car or not?

If you are talking about the tick tick tick noise, that is normal(valves?). But the whomwhom--WhomWhom-- Is not what mine sounds like.

I have the tick tick tick but not the whomwhom--whomwhom

Try a stethoscope or just a rubber hose up to your ear to zero-in on where the sound is coming from.

i bought a 10 dollar automotive stethoscope with a long extension on it. I spent about 30 minutes really trying to pinpoint the noise. There seems to be 2 very similar noises coming from the 2 areas below with the red arrows. since the t-belt and tensioner are new, what would cause this?

update

the dealer said they replaced the following parts this time around

Idler pulley 14550-RCA-A01
T-belt adjuster 14510-RCA-A01
T-belt tensioner 14520-RCA-A01

They didnt charge me anything since last time it cost me 300 bucks for a part that I didnt need and it didnt fix the problem. I can still hear this damn noise but its very faint now LOL. Im giving up for now.

Im actually questioning whether or not they even changed the above parts since I still hear this noise. What else is there to change at this point? Id like to check to see if theres new parts in there. Do I have to remove the drive belt or anything else to access the timing belt covers or is it simply just removing the bolts on the covers?

Hey I have a 2007 tl. this sort rattling noise stated at about 28000 miles. The dealer ship replaced timing belt and lower belt sprocket and shim per bulletin. However, the noise is still present. Dealership informed me that they will install a second shim. They informed me that there will be some of that noise still present. My complaint is that, that noise wasn't there before or when I purchased the car new. So what would make it normal noise now. I intend to fight it all the way to small claims court if I have too. I am also concerned that the dealership let one of their employees, not a mechanic drive my car to a specific location to really warm it up so they could diagnose the problem. When I drove my car to them from 18 miles my car well warmed up and they did listen to the noise. They do not have to drive my car 35 miles round trip just to really warm it up. Seem to me they are using my car for their own personal reasons. I will be raising hell about this. Could you please email me if your noise problem went away after the dealer's fix. I will greatly appreciate it. My email address is Katoka@comcast.net. Thank you. Randy

Thank you for posting this, im glad someone else hears this. I had the shim kit put in a week ago because of the chirp noise that started after 38K miles. After a week, now i hear this wobble noise like a piece of sheet medal in the wind. I hear the exact thing in your video. I had 2 service managers tell me they hear "normal engine noises". I had them pull a 07 TL next to it, and it didn't make the sound. The proceeded to tell me they just hear "normal engine noises" nothing "significant". I finally got them to admit they hear "something" different between the two, but not significant. Please let me know if you find a solution so I can get them to fix this. They acted like I am the boy who cried wolf when this is my first warranty claim (second visit on same issue) on the car.

if your still under warranty then i would go back, get a loaner and tell them to keep the car until its fixed. ive given up at this point. i still hear the noise but its not as loud as it was.

I just purchased a certified 08 tl and i thought i heard an abornmal noises from the pass right wheel well area when parked. Saw this thread and looks like others are hearing this too. Guess I'll bring it to their attention when I go back to the dealer to get my plates.

try the TSB associated with the chirping. For me, I still hear the noise faintly after a whole bunch of parts were changed so no luck here. I gave up
