Weird Trans Problems

Well, it happened today, in the driveway, my trans went. At least it wasn't far away from home.

So heres the story, I turned it on and waited for it to warm up for a few minutes, I then shifted it into reverse, and it made a loud clunk, I backed it up a couple of feat and put it into park. It made a loud cland and then dzzz dzzzz dzzz. I turned it off and then on again, put it into drive to get it up the drive way again, i gave it gas, it acted like it was in neutral, and then I tried to put it back into park, but it wouldnt let me shift it from neutral into reverse, so i had to put it on acc, and then shift into park...it then started rolling down the driveway...in park! I pushed it up the drive and turns out handbrake isnt as effective as I hoped, because it started inching back, it was windy though.

also, when it is in drive, the speedo shows that im going around 8 MPH which I find strange. Drive, Manual modes 1 and 2 both dont work, although I didnt try low, I can assume it also doesnt work...

Ik I need a new tranny, but can it also be the TQ or an axle/speedsensor as well?

I might post a video later if I find time.

Thanks

highly unlikely on the sensors. could try some new fluid just for grins but get ready for replacement. pull codes and report back

It could be the shift linkage. Are any of the gear selections working?

none of the gears are working, there are no codes, which i find strange, no light, no blinking d, cel, !, vsa, etc. But when you shift it out of park, the rpms go up and speedo jumps to 10 mph. Park doesnt hold the car either. Fluid looks ok.

well the only way that there could be no codes would be if it was purely a mechanical failure. something that is not being monitored or a sensor triggering a code. Its pretty hard to believe there are no codes stored.

^ weird, checked up on it this morning, still no lights. From the grinding noises, it feels mechanical. not sure where to go from here, I'm planing on getting it fixed for as little as possible and then trading it in. but im not sure where to get it fixed.

I just watched your video. Mine does the same thing besides the speedo part. I hate to say it but it looks like your transmission is shot.

I'm doing a trans fluid and filter change, along with the 2nd and 3rd gear pressure switches to see if that helps as a last resort.

How many miles are on your TL? and what year?

Seems like the 3rd gen TLs are starting to have transmission issues like the 2nd gen.

I think it's dead too, with the grinding noise when I bring it up to 4-5k rpm, I think that the main gear that selects what gear its in broke, probably near the speed sensor, clutchpacks are also burnt out which is why out of park, car speedo says it going 10 mph, I actually brought it up to 90 mph yesterday, and it got loud as hell (car didnt move only said it was going 90 lol).

I have an 04 with just under 122000. This is the original trans, and I talked to some co workers at work, also with Tl's one has an 06 thats on its 3rd trans and the other is an 05 on its second. So, it seems that theres a real problem with the trans not being able to handle the power of the engine.

I already spoke and showed the dealer my video, they said that they cant even rebuild it and the replacement will be 4000 for parts, 1500 for labor. The car is only work 6500 so im probably not going to bother fixing it...I'll just trade it in and get a new car. Id pick up a TL but the beak isnt attractive, and after mine, I personally don't want anymore acuras/hondas. The sad part is from December to February, I just spent 1500 alone on a knocker sensor, starter, and battery. This is real upsetting to me.

you can try fluid but if yours is like mine and doesnt engage in any gears what so ever, I wouldnt bother.

I need to get that car off my hands asap right now, because with the shot tranny that doesnt hold it in park, even with the handbrake on, itll inch if its really windy, it's a hazard to my other cars. If anyone is in the Newark/NYC area, Ill sell it for 3500 on the spot, clean title, service records, new battery, starter, knocker sensor.

Best of luck to you SlimTL and everyone else!

I'll still lurk the forums probably...

Sounds like these transmissions aren't worth a crap past 105,000 miles. I made it to 125,000 miles on my original tranny.

The reason why I'm changing the fluid, filter, and switches is because mine will eventually slip into gear after the car warms up. So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

It's a shame that Acura transmissions can't keep up with the long life of its reliable engines.

good luck. its too bad, from my expreience, all japanese trannys are shit, i had a toyota sienna where the trans failed when it was 6 and had 45000 miles or so. they wouldnt even cover the repair because it was 4 months past warrenty

It revs fine.. speedo moves and car doesn't.. more than likely a driveshaft issue. Check your driveshafts and CV joints (check halfshaft as well).

^ I agree. Plus,I feel like everyone has had a problem with axles at one point or another with these TLs. There was probably some vibration issues while driving at one point before one or the other gave up.

There actually was a vibration issue before they gave up, but it was only on some roads and very rarely and for a short period of time, so I figured it was probably the road...

Well, the car is in the shop right now, and my mechanic told me that Both front axles are gone, one snapped in half, the other is bent, and the trans is also gone.

The total for everything is $2500, the shop is in Union NJ. Trans is 2200, both axles are 300.

He doesn't know if the trans is bad without replacing the axles first unless the case got cracked somehow. If the case is not damaged and it probably isn't unless it was leaking fluid, I would have the axles done.

Also, how did you manage to break two axles at the same time. The car will not move with just one axle so how did both go at the same time? How did one get bent?

Putting it in drive and watching the speedo go up and then putting it in park is not exactly good for it but it's usually just the parking pawl that wears. It's the same as trying to shift into park while the car is moving, it will make a lot of noise but it usually won't actually engage the parking pawl.

I would definitely ask them why they think the transmission is bad, how an axle is bent, and how two axles went at once when the car won't go anywhere with just one axle. I believe it was ONE of the axles but not two axles and not the transmission. Make sure to ask how they diagnosed the trans failure when there's nothing coupling the trans to the wheels.

First off
"SORRY FOR THE HI-JACK.
I have been searching all over AZ.
My 07 TL Type-S that is always Well maintained
82,800 Miles.
Wouldn't go into "R" today. And the "D" Is blinking
It goes through all the gears fine.
Never had any issues.
Always used Acura/Honda fluids, Mobil 1
I checked the (auto) trans fluid- It was a pint low.
I filled it gradually (4 times) Each time I stared the car , No change.
Funny thing is the "VSC" Trangle Light is Staying On- which is "VSC" off.
Hmmm ??? Please Help

SORRY FOR THE HI-JACK
