Weird ignition/gear shift issues
Weird ignition/gear shift issues
It started about 2 weeks ago. My wife called me and told me that the key wouldn't come out of the ignition. She did the usual turning the steering wheel back and for thing and it didn't help. She somehow ended up getting the key out but didn't really know how. I was driving it the following night and the same thing happened. I ended up putting the car into drive and back into park and the key came out.
This morning my wife goes out to the car and the key wouldn't turn at all in the ignition. It was completely locked out. She called the dealer and the lady at service said to keep wiggling the steering wheel and the gear shift to make the key turn. Lady at the dealer seemed like it was a common problem and eventually the key turned.
I didn't hear the conversation between my wife and the dealer but from what I understand the sensor in the gear lever that lets the car know the car is in park is going out. Makes sense. If the car thinks it is in drive it won't release the key when you turn it off and at the same time won't let you turn the key when you try to turn it on.
The shitty part about all of this is that the bumper to bumper warranty on the car literally ended yesterday. The service writer at the dealer is appying to Acura for a goodwill authorization to do the fix under warranty when the car goes in on Friday. I've already decided that if they aren't going to cover it I'm not paying the dealership to fix it. I can do plenty of work on cars myself. Swapped and turbocharged my brother's Civic. Did every fix and mod to my Prelude and the Accord we had before the TL. I've done all the maintenance on our cars for years but haven't done anything other than change the oil on the TL because it hasn't needed anything yet.
I guess I'm wondering, is this is a common issue with these vehicles? Also, to anybody that has done this fix before, is everything accessible through the center console where the gear shift is? Just hoping it's fairly centralized and I don't have to take apart half the dash and the steering wheel column.
BTW, the car is an 07 base with navi...
