Warped Rotor
I have been telling my Acura Technician since 14,000 miles that the my 05 TL shakes when applying the brakes at highway speed (60-70 mph). 2 services later still they could not find anything. Finally, at 29,000 miles I took the tech for a ride and he immediately said the rotors were warped and I needed an entire brake job. After doing some research I found that in 2003 there was a service bulletin posted for this problem. I pointed this out to the service desk manager when I picked up the car and he said that was an old problem and was fixed. Is this true? I have never known this as maintenance and none of my previous cars ever experienced this problem. Does anyone have any current info on this? I have taken it up with the Regional office. I think it should be under warranty.
I have an appointment with my local Acura Dealer this morning @ 9:30AM to replace both rear disc that are rusted beyond recovery on my 2005TL that is 15 months old with 36,000KM on it. The front ones are in perfect shape. The one on the rear are rusted and deeply grooved.
They already look at it las week and told me they would replace them No Charge.
I will keep you posted.
Best regards from Montreal

The Regional Acura office called this morning and offered to refund me 50% of the repair cost as a one time gesture of goodwill, about $180. I agreed to accept with the miles on the car and uncertainty regarding the actual cause. Thanks for the comments.

They have replaced both rear rotor and brake pads under warranty. According to the mechanic, certain 3rd Gen TL do experience these kind of problems and Acura applies warranty on a case per case basis.
The mechanic did mention only seeing this on the rear rotors of the 3rd Gen TL only and not on any other Acura.

hi frenchnew !

the rear rotor rusting problem was solved on the 2006 model. 04-05 models have this problem and Acura investigated on the case and finally released new rotors and pads (using the same parts # though)
we usually machine the rotors on a brake lathe when still within specs (first time doing brakes or first time rotors warped), but the problem here is that the rust gets so deep on rear 04-05, we'd be machining them for so long and most of the time get the rotors too thin (getting them out of spec).
so there's no recall nor service bulletin on this, but they are aware of the problem, investigated it and released new parts.

One way to help prevent warped rotors on Hondas and Acuras is to NOT OVERTIGHTEN the wheel lug nuts.
They're supposed to be at 80 ft-lbs. Make sure any shop that removes and reinstalls your wheels does this.
