Transmission Problem - Car Jerks While Braking
Transmission Problem - Car Jerks While Braking
Hi,
My 04 TL seems to be having some kind of transmission problems. I was wondering if anybody is experiencing the same thing. If I am driving 50 mph and begin to brake (like a red light or stop sign), the car switches to 4th gear, then 3rd but appears to struggle to switch down after that. When I am close to the car in front of me, it seems like the car jerks forward, which I am assuming the engine is braking by going to 1st gear. I have come very close to rear ending people in front of me numerous times. I also noticed if I am in park and step on my brakes, the RPMs go up. I have an automatic transmission. Any advice would be appreciated, I will most likely take it to the dealer this week.
Thanks!

I am a fairly safe driver. This problem didn't occur the first 30,000 miles I owned the car. The thing is, even if I am driving at low speeds, the car "hiccups" and jerks forward suddenly. I was just using the braking as an example.
Thanks for the driving tip!

Hi, I was wondering if you were ever able to find out what this problem was. I am expericing the same thing. It jerks when I’m braking and hiccups/jerks when I’m at low speeds. I’ve noticed that the symptoms goes away when I drive the car for a long time or when I have the AC running. I can’t really feel the symptoms in the morning when I first start up. They usually more noticeable when it’s warmed up. I’ve done a transmission drain and refill 3 times, changed the pressure switches (all 3), and changed the motor/trans mounts. I’ve also kept up with al the maintenance ; spark plugs, air filter, cleaned throttle body, oil change. Any ideas ?

1. at least in my case, it wasn’t a transmission issue. It may actually be either an engine sensor or something that works with it. Think catalytic converter and O2 sensor, for example.
2. the solution: my MAF sensor was screwed up and had to be changed. Before I got it replaced, there was hesitation in the accelerator pedal, the car had a rough idle, and namely…the car jolted forward a little bit, as you and other users mentioned with their cars. If I’m not mistaken, that lurching/jolting feeling is your engine misfiring at low speeds. If you track the rpm at that time, you’ll see it drop, then jump up a little high, if I remember correctly, which as I’ve come to learn, is not what your car should be doing. It became a new normal for me, though. I’m also only 18, and while this isn’t the only car I’ve driven, it is the car I drive most, so I don’t have a huge sample size, but I’m also just used to it. Also, the car idled high, sitting around 1k, then dropping down to around 800 or so, then jumping up to 1k again, thanks to the rough idle. All that…fixed from the maf sensor replacement.
3. here’s my episode that lead to me finding out what was truly wrong. I tried catalytic converter first, and while it was worn, no luck in fixing this particular issue. Have driven the car like this for probably 7 months or so. Thought maybe it was O2 sensors, but then literally just the other day, a little after I had been thinking of changing the O2 sensors, all hell broke loose and the car had a terrible episode. I was driving and did a little pull
, afterwards, the rpms should’ve settled, but the car instead started stalling, then rpms started going crazy (would hit like 3k ish, maybe more, then hit 800 or so, then back up to 3k or so repeatedly), limp mode activated, and the car was stalling beyond belief now. I managed to make it to a parking lot that was thankfully conveniently close. I shut off the car cause I was terrified. Tried to turn it back on, it cranked, but every time, it started sputtering, again hitting 3k or so, then dropping down to 0, meaning the engine stopped running entirely. I thought for sure I drove the car too rough. It was also record-breaking cold weather, so I figured maybe that’s what it was. After waiting a day and a half or so, since it had been towed to my main mechanic on a Saturday, and they open on Monday, I came to find out, this seemed to be a safety mechanism to protect the car, as it detected a serious issue. Without the maf sensor, the engine doesn’t know how much air is coming into the engine, heavily impacting the AIR-fuel mixture, which is needed for combustion. Seems to me like the maf had issues for a while, but now it was too bad for my poor baby to run. Had this episode not happened, I NEVER would have thought about replacing the maf. Here we are. So far, so good! While this may not be your issue, I would heavily advise checking it regardless!
