That sucks

Part of the reason I went with an 08 TL-S is because during my brief research about transmission failures, I saw a few reports from 07's, but dont think I saw any from 08's. Hopefully Im safe

Is the 07-08 TL-S transmission the same as 07-08 TL?

yup, just do 3x3 fluid changes & change out your pressure switches and you should be fine.

From your description, and not being able to put it into park, I'm willing to bet it's your axle that broke.

+1 to guitar's reply. Based on the noise you heard plus lack of any movement in any gear plus you car's year and mileage...broken axle. Let us know what you find out!

It should be quite easy to spot though, just look under the car, you have a 1in metal rod with a big rubber boot on it, it goes way deeper in the engine that all other rods you can see, it should clearly be snapped in 2 at some place. The repair shouldn't cost you more than 200$. And if you pulled up to a midas parking lot, then you're right there and will save on towing. While you're there, check the other axle, both my axles snapped within 12 months of each other.

I got my axles for about $160 each side from an Acura dealer online. Good thing you have an 07-08, as the 04-06 automatic axles are quite a bit more expensive. And also, for 07-08, base and type S axles are the same. I am surprised to hear that your axles snapped this early though. I had mine changed out but they just had slight leaks, nowhere near snapping, and they had about 160k miles on them.

Couldn't tell you exactly because i'm in canada and our parts and labor tend to be more expensive than in the US, but for a new OEM axle from Acura, it cost me 190$ for the part, 1 hour labor at 73$/h plus a few dollars here in there for new bolts, some thread lock and misc items. Total was with tax 315$.

Funny thing is, my story is 100% the same as your. My axle snapped after being at a red light and I had just enough momentum to drive into a Mr. Muffler parking lot, but because there was 2 hours left before they closed, and they had to order the part from the dealer, they took care of it the next morning. Worst part in my story is, just a few days earlier, I posted this thread asking other members for their opinion on a weird wear on the axle, where I took the decision to order the axle and replace it myself, then 48 hours later it broke. Thankfully the site hasnt fulfilled my order yet so I was able to cancel it

$190 for an OEM one? ^^^

That's not as bad as I thought, I should probably replace mine sometime.
It's not leaking, but it does make click click click sound only when I turn left at full lock.

Been like this for a year

Now I'm reading how dangerous it can be...

EDIT: wait how'd you get it for $190, when the US price listing is 523 and 570 per side?

Is it really your axle causing the clicks? My TL has those clicks when I turn left, and it was the left axle that was just changed. Could it be something else? I tried putting silicone lube on all bushings and balljoints and the sound is still there. I'm thinking it might be the steering column.

You sure you got the right part? On a few sites i saw, the left axle is WAY less expensive than the right.

I remember my right axle was close to 600$, but my car was under warranty so I didnt pay

we're talking about replacing the entire axle assembly, i think you deceived me and got me excited saying a new oem axle costs 190
when people replace axles they usually refer to whole assembly.

yes im looking at the right parts, diagram part # 4 and #5. 523 and 570 for 04-06, 160 for both for 07/08.
and no, i don't consider the difference between sides to be "way less expensive". they both crazy expensive.

Acura Parts @ AcuraOEMparts.com - Genuine Acura OEM Parts from Delray Acura

as for your question, it could be anything, im not certain it's the axle but mine are due for a change anyway since i get ridiculous amount of vibration and im at 196k km.
it could be loose suspension bolts, or worn bushings, or something for all i know

I don't have a dealer. The garage was Mr Muffler. I have no idea how this works, maybe you do, but if as an example, the part was aftermarket, would it not have a different part number? Because the part number that is listed on that acura diagram and the one on the invoice is very similar.

I just checked on ebay, and it seems that for some reason, the left axle can be found way under the listed price you linked. Check yourself, I found a new original acura axle for 225$ shipped. If you check ebay records, you can find numerous other auctions for similar prices...and a lot of the sellers originate from Mississauga

If the part is sold for 570$ in the USA, you only know it would be at least 1K in Canada. Not only because of the exchange rate, but the "Canadian Premium" we all have to pay. I checked for the Acura stock subwoofer, in the USA it sells for about 50$, in Canada, the dealer sells the same part for 135$. 50$ USA is about 65$, so WTF is the 70$ remaining for?

The axle prices for my 2003 CL were listed at $600 for many years. Then all of a sudden I noticed price was changed to $150 per axle. Before price drop everyone was buying crap axles from auto zone etc. which always failed.

Mr. Muffler?
Sounds like a generic shop that would use aftermarket axles.

And no, just because the invoice has the honda part number on it, doesn't necessarily mean it's OEM. It's so they can cross reference into what is the correct part number to the aftermarket part they source.
If the box you took a picture of had an official Honda part number sticker, it's OEM.

Such a sticker like:

Name: PARTNUMBER.jpg
Views: 848
Size: 66.5 KB

or this:

You're going to need to provide me a link from ebay please. What I just searched just came up with used axles, aftermarket axles, or new axles that cost $500

and yeah canadian price premiums suck

The picture I posted was not from the box that carried my part but from the ebay listing. Not sure how i got there yesterday but i landed on a page with a history of listings that ended between august and october, the prices ranged from 200$ to 265 i believe. They were all genuine honda parts. Different sellers, but all from Ontario. I did a reverse image search and found one of the listings on kijiji

Update: you guys are right!! It was the driver side axle. The axle snap right where the rubber balancer is. On top of that, the bolt to the fork won't come loose for my mechanic had to cut the lower control arm. So a new control arm was order. $800 in the hole now I'm getting my car back tomorrow. Thanks Acurazine!!

800 better than 3000$. check other axle, they might not be too far apart in wear if they were never replaced

Yes Vibration at 40MPH up. Sometime there's little vibration and other times a lot/heavy vibration. Rust must of build up behind the balancer due to salt roads here in the northeast.

Back in August my 03 TLS with 355k snapped its passenger axle right in the middle of the rubber balancer. Thing was rusted out really bad and just twisted from a snap of the throttle on a back road.

Scared me pretty good but an easy fix when I had a spare in my garage.

I had 0 vibration. My warning sign was a simple visual inspection. I noticed this while doing a routine inspection. I ordered the axle shortly after, my axle snapped in 2 two days after ordering the part and had to get it fixed at a shop.

Mine JUST went this weekend and I nearly crapped my pants thinking it was the transmission. I just got the call not 5min ago but they said the genuine part was on back-order and no clue just yet when it could arrive. They have an aftermarket option in stock but I decided to wait on the eta of the genuine before I make a decision. Can't remember the price quoted right now, but it was ~$400-600 out the door for aftermarket, and $800-900 genuine.

That genuine price seems high just to replace an axle. R u replacing other parts too? Was it the drive side that broke on your car? GL, Sam
