Transmission?
Transmission?
Hi fellow TLers.
Just want to pick your brains and seek some advice.
Location: Toronto, Canada
My 04 TL has automatic transmission. Currently at 110000kms.
I was parked on my friends driveway. I put it in reversed and was able to get out, as soon as I put it into drive, the car would not move and just revved. Then I heard clicking noises as I tried to gas. Then could not put it back into park, can only go back to N. I put it into N and turned off the car and then out it back into park. I tried it again and same thing. I had it towed to my mechanic but he is not opened today so won't know til tomorrow. I've searched the threads and seems like the tranny.
Anyone had the same experience and please provide advice on what to do.
Many thanks.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I had the exact same problem in the beginning of the year with my 2005 TL with 180k on it. I was coming out of the driveway and once I was on the road, I shifted from reverse to drive and stepped on the gas and heard a loud bang. I can only rev and cannot put it back to park. It turned out one of my CV joint broke in half.

What you describe was exactly what I experienced.
One loud bang and can only rev and hearing grinding noise from the engine compartment.
So was everything fine after replacing the CV joint?
Can you shed more light on this and the fix?
Please and thank you.
If this is the same problem, then you will need to get new front drive shafts. I would recommend replacing both at the same time. You wouldn't know until get under the car. But from your description, I would bet that one of your shaft broke in half, just like mine.
I first thought the tranny blew on me too, but fortunately it was not the tranny. If it's your drive shaft, thank your friend that it happened in front of his house. I thanked my friend. Trust me, it's better that you broke your shaft on a stand still than on the highway.
These CV shafts go without any warning, unless properly inspected. I'm surprised that yours went at a much lower mileage than mine, but again your car is older.
Anybody with an 2004-2005 or high mileage with original CV shaft, they should get it checked. If you follow the maintenance schedule, it is on there.

Stuck in 3rd gear
I have an 08 Tl type-s with 80k. Twice now the transmission gets stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear, not sure which one, I believe its 3rd. I have to pull over and re-start the car and then it works fine. Will changing the ATF fluid help this issue or is it a lost cause bc the tranny is going bad??

sounds like a cv joint broke.
Hey Kasshern,
When you changed your drive shaft when it broke, did you change one or both?
I changed by broken drivers side today, but the mechanic recommended that I changed the right side as well just in case. I didn't do the right side tho. Just curious to see what others are doing.
Thanks.
