Tranny is starting to go, what to do?

This seems like a popular subject lately, and I was hoping to get some advice on how to best handle this situation. My tranny is starting to take a dump. Should I try to get it repaired? I had it flushed and everything and it didn't help.

Auto yes, and just over 80k. I actually just read "I Hate Cars'" post about the pressure sensors. I'm wondering if replacing those sensors would be worth it even though 3rd gear has already started to slam. In other words, is the damage already done, or is it still salvageable?

Rebuild. I changed the pressure switches at 70k. My trans died before 73k.

It's worth a shot. When you say your 3rd gear slams, can you explain how exactly? Your trans only has 80k on it and is already starting to give out, my car is sitting at 76k and you got me concerned

If I'm coasting on the highway around that powerband and then accelerate, sometimes it will shift down really hard and it will "slam" into 3rd. I don't know if I'm explaining it very well, that's the best I can do lol. It's happening more and more often though. Really unfortunate.

I'm considering using this as my personal excuse to just dump it at carmax and start over, maybe get a Type S MT.

If yours is good right now, I would replace the pressure sensors as preventative maintenance since the 5AT is so dodgy.

May not necessarily be the trans, I had a similar problem back when I had 80k miles on my '05 Auto TL and was still under warranty. I took it in and they did a warranty repair for all 3 motor mounts, that was the last warranty work I had done on the car before it expired.

I'm at 106k now and trans is still going, I'm running the redline ATF though, have been changing my 3rd & 4th sensors and just installed an external trans cooler & magnefine filter last week.

I'd contact www.LKQcorp.com through the Keystone group and check out a used tranny. Total for my used tranny (replacement had 63,000 on it) was $1400. That was changed out at 209,000 miles and now I have 340,000 total... Take it to any shop with a decent rep and they should be able to swap out the transmission for around $2100 total. (Thats with the used tranny, ATF-Z1 fluid flush and refill on the newer unit and the labor costs.)
