Tranny Help

Hey guys, im new here and have been searching the site for quite a while. Even when i didnt have a TL. Well anyways i bought my TL about 5 months ago. I have found a problem with the transmission. On the initial start up of the car after it sits unran for about 8+hrs when i start it up and take off the it revs high from first to second (abut 4 to 5 rpms) then it shifts hard into 2nd. After it goes into second sometimes it will slip rev to 4500rpms then engage hard into 3rd. Then is fine fourth and fifth(besides shfting alittle hard). Then the cycle starts over again til the car becomes "warmed up".(this only happend if i let the car sit for more then 8 hours. I can let the car sit for an hour or two and have no problems) But i have found a way to go around this. If i start the car up and let it run for 10 mins before i go to take off the car is fine. I did the 3X3 tranny fluid change.( little bit of shavings/alittle discolored fluid) But just found out there is a filter i can get to without taking the tranny off. So i ordered that and will change that asap. I was wondering if anyone could help with this problem or has anyone encountered this problem. The dealer is no help. They took it in and cleaned the solenoids and the car acutally did not do this...but after about a week it went right back to messing up.Any help i would appricate. Thanks guys.

Also I forgot to mention that when this problem occurs i will put it into the slap shift mode and it does not work. I have to turn the car off then back on for it to work. And the gear numbers do not show up on the cluster. Hope that helps more.

Yep. Youll see it comes down to friction modifiers and 3rd n 4th pressure switches

Thanks guys. That is a great write up. I think my next try is to replace those switches. I was maybe thinking the solenoids were bad but his thread makes sense. Its either the solenoids work or they dont work. so i think im going to try the switches ($33.51 dont have much to lose) im just hoping the solenoids are not bad. They are pretty pricey.

It's slipping in 1st and 2nd gear.. definitely not related. If it worked well with the solenoid cleaning and adjustment it sounds like it might be the issue. I remember a member a while back who adjusted his solenoids. That member's family member works on Honda transmission and they reported that they too go out of spec so they adjust the solenoid a quarter turn or so.. whether that's related or not I thought I'd pass it on. I wouldn't just be throwing money at the issue until you fix it. There could be a couple of culprits to your issue other than the the solenoids including a clogged valve body.

Did you say when you slap it into SS that you can't manually shift from 1-2, 2-3 and so on?

First to second is high rev. No slip, just doesnt seem to know when to shift to second. Second to thrid there is a slip. then catches and catches hard. The shifts hard the rest of the way until warmed up.
And yes, when i start the car up on a cold start and put it into SS it will not let me shift. But sometimes the number 1 will come up but wont let me shift. Just reads 1 the whole time no matter what gear i am in. And sometimes no numbers will come up. Dealer told me that its cold outside(25 degrees) he said let ur car warm up. I wanted to tell him to stick it..... but i was nice.

Here is a Sonnax article describing adjusting the CPC's A and B.
