TL 2006: multiple issues with clutch

Hi,

I have an 2006 TL, 55K on the clock or so. I have a number of 'clutch' issues I'd like to hear opinions on. I have read a bunch about these various issues.

1. I have the clutch pedal clicking issue, I tried the procedure to spray lithium grease in the MC, but that did no good. The clicking comes and goes. I cannot figure any rhyme or reason to it. One day there, next day gone!

2. Sometimes, after driving, say 30 mins on the highway, 6th gear, a cool 2500 RPM or so, I go for the clutch and it is stiff. I.e., does not feel like i am getting the full assist, which make it difficult to downshift to 5th. What I find is I have to double clutch it, i.e., the second one seems to get the pressure up in the system to do the job.

3. Sometimes, when I cold-start the car, I let the clutch out and get engagement IMMEDIATELY, i.e., way low down in the pedal travel versus the normal, higher-up place. This seems way similar to (2) above.

4. Again, sometimes, when I am ripping through the gears after exiting a toll both, not necessarily winding the 3.2L out to the red line, by the time I am rolling into 4th, the assist on the clutch seems to weaken. i.e., it is the same as the two above.

I look at these as 3 different 'use cases' if you will.

I checked fluid level for the clutch: good to go.

I am suspecting the master cylinder.

Any reason no to? I cannot imagine it is due to the clutch itself, since it is well behaved > 50% of the time. It is the < 50% of the time that is driving me nuts!

Lastly, is there a DIY procedure for MC replacement?

thanks!

How much miles did you put on your clutch?

And to be honest, I'm not exactly sure whats going on with your clutch. I personally never encountered any of these problems on my TSX.

Bought the car with 43K. I have been driving a manual transmission vehicle since I was 14 years old, so it ain't the operator! I put 201K on my '94 Corolla, same clutch. Had a 5.0L '86 GT I beat the friggin snot out of and that clutch was solid when I sold it with 133K on the clock (now, the rear end, that was a different story!)

It's normal for the pedal to get very slightly stiffer at high rpm.

It sounds like your hydrualics are going out or you have air in the system. Should be as simple as a bleed or a master or slave cylinder.

Check for leaks at the master and slave and if nothing if found, bleed it.

I've never done a clutch job on a TL but the slaves are usually cheap and easy to get to so if you don't find a problem, you can throw a new slave cylinder on there and see what happens.

Is there a DIY article for bleeding and replacing the MC and the slave cylinders on the TLs ? I'll take a look to see how fun it'll be. I have bled many of brakes over the years...

+1 on that - definitely something hydraulic. Slipping, chattering, noise, etc. are mechanical issues.

OK, will check the hydraulic system as suggested. Is there a DYI article somewhere I can reference describing how to do it?

You have an automatic TSX. You don't have a clutch.
