sounds about right. got my Pilot done by an independent shop for about $550. Dealers quoted me between $700-850. That was including water pump.

I don't know much about them, but I wish we had a timing chain. Every car I've ever owned has had a timing belt and I hate worrying about them in the red zone. Tuff DIY, too.

I still believe the dealer is screwing people with that price. I have a friend that used to work at dobbs honda as a mastertech. He tells me all the good stories about what the dealers do. All I know is I bought the parts from Lemon Grove Honda. Timing kit is $183.23 and the tensioner $79.40 with free shipping. the labor he is charging me 160.00!! Just for shits and giggles I called both dealers here in town and dobbs alone wanted 777.00 labor only!! So if you buy the parts elsewhere thinking you will save money........think again! Honda raises the price of the labor if you have the parts!! So with the extra money I saved I bought a UR Crank Pulley and still saved tons of money!!

The job doesn't take honda as long as they say it does!! If you had a mechanic who had never done the job before it might take him or her as long as honda states.

For both water pump and belt, I think that may be the cheapest price I've seen from a dealer.

Do a search on "timing belt". You'll find numerous quotes in the threads the search pulls up.

I just did an 03 Pilot (same thing) and I think it cost $300 in OEM parts (from HondaPartsNow.com). Here's what was replaced:

- Timing Belt
- Timing Belt Auto Tensioner
- Water Pump
- 2 gal Honda Type 2 (blue) coolant
- Power Steering Belt
- AC/Alternator Belt

It isn't hard, if you've done any other Honda. It would be damn near impossible to do it alone though. As always, the hardest part is getting the crank pulley off. I've never done a V6 before and it only took me 5.5 hours. It would have been a bit less, but I had a radiator cap stuck on an aftermarket radiator...

That seems like a decent price - I always assumed it would be pushing 1500

it doesn't matter how long the mechanic actually takes, the dealer is going to quote and charge you exactly what the service manual says a timing job goes for, like 5 hrs. The tech doing the job may be a pro and get it done in 3, but your paying for 5 and he gets a nice smoke break.

yeah, I used to do timing belts on my VW's back in the day. After having done most major service jobs myself through the years, I pick my battles anymore...especially after I did the UR pulley. I don't want to ever touch that crank bolt again!

very true. I think its still BS though. If the job doesn't take you 5 hours then you shouldn't charge for 5 hours. Its a legal rip off is what it is. Same thing with the 110.00 diagnostic charge. You hook up the car to the OBD2 port, scan, then read the codes. Takes less than 2 minutes. But they charge 1 hour labor. makes me sick!

imagine a dealer that charged for actual labor and didn't jack up the price on parts. He would have the busiest and most profitable garage in town and would probably eventually be off'd by the other import dealers in town.

I go back and forth on this. I generally think charging book time is appropriate, even if it takes the mechanic less time. What I don't like is a ridiculously high book time for jobs that clearly don't take that long
