Sudden starter problem.

Never had a starter problem before with my 05 TL, for the first time today i had some issues the car wouldent start i put the car in N then back in P then it started after 15 or so tries then a few hours later i tried again and there was no hope. My friend is a mechanic he took a look and said it was the starter, does anyone know any places have staters for a cheaper price, and overlooking other forums im not looking forward to spending 900 dollars on a starter.

Take your starter off & take it to a starter rebuild shop. OEM starter better quality new parts houseunits.

I am confused, does the engine turn over when you try starting? Or do you hear an odd clicking noise? Or it does nothing when you turn the key?

$900 for a starter? I see them on rockauto.com for around $100.

The starting system is made up of 4 basic components

Battery -> Ignition -> Starter Solenoid
Batter -> Starter Solenoid -> Starter motor

When you turn the key, the voltage drops on the batter by .1-.3 V and then activates the Solenoid (A switch) to turn on the high power system that is connected to the battery to start the motor.

Try putting a Multimeter (Black lead on neg, red on positive) on Volt setting. Have someone try to start the car and see what the voltage drop is. If it's .1-.3V that means that the ignition system is fine and that the problem is with the starter solenoid (Switch). Also it tells you that it could not be starter itself. Replace the solenoid and your set!

But if the voltage drop is 2-3.5V that means that the solenoid and ignition are fine and the problem is the starter.

ITS IMPERATIVE you do that before you take out your alternator. I've had it happen 3-4 times where the cable that connects to the starter solenoid as worked it's way loose because it's not a locking connector, just a simple slide on.

I got a remanufactured starter from Advance Auto for $100. They always have coupon codes, mine was 50% off so it ends up to be $50 for me. Works great for the last two months. Good luck.

2004 TL A-Spec

Sorry to hijack, but I can't start a thread of my own yet. I tried to start with my remote start and it wouldn't crank not even after deactivated or with the key. So I...

Tried park and neutral multiple times.

Locked car with door switch, then unlocked with viper r.s. fob. Started right up. ???

Drove to store wouldn't start at all.

Had battery tested and charged. Reinstalled to no avail.

Read the rem starter manual back to front.

Whacked the starter (I think) with a hammer (under battery and hoses?)

Cursed a lot and called a tow.

Before I shell out $100 for a starter and start ripping things apart I have a couple questions.

Could it be a relay, or a starter interrupter from the rem starter (I could not find anything in the manual)? If so how would I diagnose?

If it is just the solenoid can I replace just it for a couple bucks? If so where can I find one?

Could it be the park sensor? How to test?

Don't know about the '04 but my '06's starter comes in one unit so you need to replace it as one. Disconnect the remote starter from the TL's starter circuit and see if it's the same. My money goes to a bad starter.

Good luck,
