Struggling to start

Hello all,

I purchased my TL about 3 months ago, it's an '08 5AT w\ nav. No engine mods yet.

In the last 2 months, maybe 4 or 5 times, I've turned the key, released it and the car has struggled a bit to start, and when it finally turns over, it's sputters like it's about to stall, then catches and runs fine after I give it a tap oin the gas. The first 2 or 3 times, I chocked it up to the fact that it was cold outside (I live in NY and it was maybe 35-45 degrees, cold start in the morning), but today, on about the 4th or 5th start of the day, after being shut off for 3 hours, it had the same problem, and it was about 45 degrees out, so it wasn't that cold.

My question: Is this normal or happening to anyone else? Should I have it looked at? Should I just hold the key until it starts and not rely on the "one touch" start?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

test your battery, min is 550 cold crank amps (CCA's) also try this, put the car into the key position to where the radio/a/c, etc, is powered up but the car is not, wait for your fuel gauge to read, then 3 seconds, then start. See if that helps. If it does, then it's the fuel pump.

It's the battery. Before I sold my TL, I thought the same thing about "eth gas" but in the end, the OEM battery suck!

yea i agree with everyone else its most likely ur battery not having enough juice to start. so if i would buy a new battery or take it to acura and have them replace the battery but the problem won't go away if u get another acura battery.

What's up neighbor, I just had my battery replaced free under warranty. Its not unheard of for 08 to go, quiet a few members with 08's had their battery replaced. They plain suck and its becomming more apparent due to the cold weather now.

why aren't you finishing the start, and just releasing the key? IMO you should hold the key in the start position until you know it's started..

the tl has a "one touch" start feature...you just need to turn the key and let it go, and the start sequence continues on its own until it starts....it might just be a new feature on 07-08 models....

as for the battery, my 07 battery needed to replaced after 10 months...the dealer gave me a new one under warranty, and the new one is different then the oem one...it still says acura on it, and it has a 120 month warranty on it....

Holding the key won't make a difference. Once the signal is sent to start it, there's nothign else to do.

This happend when i first bought the car 1 week after in the winter, the car struggled to start, went to dealer, and he said this happens with car with lower emission thing. IT only happend a couple of other times in the cold, but it starts within seconds of not having to do anything else. This also happend to my 06 Pontiac G6, but it happend more freq in that car then the TL>

Sup guys...I'm new here and I'm actually posting for my GF who owns a White '08 TL TypeS. She's only had the car for about 3-4 months and this is the 2nd time where starting has been an issue. Both times occured when she was out of town for more than 2 days. Her battery was already replaced once. This Friday will be round 2 for start up issue. I'll keep everyone posted. Perhaps they're using ineffective batteries?

Do a search on HFL (Hands Free Link) and battery and see if its your HFL that is causing battery drain. Cuz I think that's what my problem is and suspect the problem to be in all these 08's getting drained.

Elegant Type S - Thanks...I'll have her disable the HFL when she's gone on weekends. That'll be a good test.

Also depends on how many miles are on your car and how many times you've tried to crank it over in cold weather. 35 Degrees is pretty cold and it will weaken the starter motor over time. The battery issue is also a possibility.

So, is the battery the root cause? This is ridiculous...I've had 2 Audi's and never had an issue. I didn't expect this from Acura.

If anyone has a solution, I'd appreciate. It's gotta be something that is causing the battery to drain.

My 08 Type-S with 5k had a dead battery over the weekend. Car is driven daily and parked inside a garage, hmmm. Took it to the Dealer today and they couldn't find anything wrong. I told them it was ironic that I had to jump a 08 Acura with my 67 Camaro (haha). Hopefully no more problems.
