steering wheel rattle

My 07 TL S started making a rattle behind the steering wheel at about 4000 miles. I noticed that when I put a great deal of pressure on the wheel the noise goes away. So I thought it would be easy to identify and fix. The service manager went out with me and agreed there was a noise. But they have had the car for two days and can not figure it out. THey have even communicated with Acura's national tech network and have not found similar incidents. Anyone out there have any clues?

Did they check the panels under the dash for any loose clips. I had what I thought to be a steering wheel rattle, the tech, service advisor, and service manager agreed on the test drive it was there. It turned out to be a broken clip under the dash panel and just transmitted through the steering wheel.

Very odd because I would apply pressure on the wheel and it would go away. Try that, I hope it helps.

thanks...

I just called the service manager and passed that on (they are on day III and still haven't figured it out). Thanks again.

jharrsion, this seems like a common issue with the TL since 2004. do a search in the problems and fixes section and you will see several threads on this.

i also have a 07 TL-S with a rattle in the steering wheel, usually over bumpy roads in colder weather (sounds like a chirping, spring-like noise). try banging on the right underside of the steering wheel - thats how i am able to duplicate the noise. i took it in for this issue twice - first time they said they tightened some stuff in the steering wheel column, it actually fixed the issue for about 4 months, then it came back. second time i went in they said its a "normal noise" and nothing can be done about it (thats what my dealership likes to say about every problem). when i find some time i am going to try to take it to a different dealership.

i remember reading in a couple threads (sorry don't have a link to them) that one person had the airbag replaced and another had some cable reels to the airbag replaced and that fixed the steering wheel rattle problem.

good luck and keep us updated.

follow up

My dealer had my car for 3.5 days...pretty significant in my opinion for a 5k mile car. Anyway, they determined that the noise coming from my steering wheel was coming from the ignition. So they ordered and installed a new one and they say the noise has gone away. I'll let you know if that is not the cause of the problem. Let's hope it is...I'm very tired of the RDX loaner.

ignition was the problem...

they said that they had never seen anything like this but the ignition itself was loose inside. in fact, when they took it out and held it in their hand, it would rattle when shaken. so i had to get a new ignition and new keys.
