Steering wheel locked when replacing ignition switch
Steering wheel locked when replacing ignition switch
Just got a new ignition switch. Took the old one out and installed the new one. At first I had difficulty inserted the key in to test, but when I turned the steering wheel it locked into place. Tried to turn the wheel and turn the key hoping to release it. No luck.
I notice that the car now beeps like I left the key in the ignition even though I have it in my hand. The key goes in, but it won't push all the way in for me to turn it.
Did I by accident engage some safety when I took the old ignition switch off and trying to fit the new one on.
The reason I got the ignition switch was I was having issues with starting having eliminated battery and starter as the probable fault.
Any way to release the wheel? BTW, I notice the brake peddle is now stiff or locked in place.

Move the steering wheel from side to side, while at the same time attempting to turn the key in the ignition. When doing the two actions at the same time you can exit the steering wheel lock and then start your vehicle.
What I notice is that the key goes in, but not all the way. The car beeps as though I still have the key in the cylinder but don't.
I wondering when I removed the original ignition switch, if I may have triggered it in a lock position. The removal of the ignition switch was a simple process. Just two screws. At the end where the ignition switch fits on, I see that the metal barrel that fits into the ignition switch is sticking out. I can't recall if this was normal or not when I removed the original.
Again, the second I open the car door, it beeps as though I left the key in the ignition, but it's in my hand.
Alexb92 thanks for the response. I tried that so many times. I checked out many of the threads and youtube videos on the same exact problem. The steering wheel can only move about 1/2" to the right and man, it's a hell of a tension on it. Tried turning the key while tying to turn the wheel. No luck.

You replace part #9, correct?^^^^
When I tried sliding in the new one to align with "metal shaft" not sure if it may have lock the steering wheel. From the pics you can see the key goes in but not all the way so as to be able to turn it. It's seems like it's locked in a permanent position. When I remove the key it's still lighted and beeps like the key is still in the ignition when it's not. The steering wheel is tight. It can only move about 1/2" to the right. I tried turning it and playing with the key to see if would release it. No luck. Using my finger to push on the silver metal shaft at the opposing end, as I play with the key resulted in no luck in releasing the steering wheel.
There are tons of threads I read through with similar issue and I've tried all the steps but still no luck.
I even jacked up the front of the car to relieve pressure off the wheel and then tried to turn the steering wheel right and left, while jiggling the key, still no luck.
The shifter was always in the park position, but by accident I was staring at it and saw this little silver tab near the shifter. I used my fingernail and popped it out and just took the key and stuck it in that space. The shifter now moves from park to neutral and drive. So I tried shifting to drive and neutral and experimented with turning the steering wheel and the key, but still no luck.
Short of removing those two shear bolts and releasing the whole locking mechanism, there has to be way to just release it from the state it's currently in.
I've never had an issue with the key, lock or the mechanism. It was just intermittent starting. I went from new battery, starter and finally the ignition switch. But in sliding the new ignition switch on, I may have activated a lock on the car.
I've been looking to see if there is a pin-hole available where I can released whatever is holding the steering wheel in place and allow the key to go all the way into the lock.

As I mentioned, I first eliminated the battery (new) and starter (new) as being the issue with the intermittent no crank. I then moved on to the ignition switch as a possible source.
Before I ordered a new ignition switch, I wanted to see how easy it was to access it. I followed the instructions as posted on one thread. It was simple. I was able to remove it and put it back and use the car, even though the no crank issue still existed. I then place an order for a new ignition switch.
The switch was suppose to be here by last Monday. I was tracking it. Well the USPS carrier didn't even ring the friggin door bell because the package was in a box and couldn't fit in the mail slot. I called and filed a complaint. They were then suppose to redeliver on that Tuesday. Again they didn't deliver. Had hell with them. On Wednesday I just happened to step outside and notice the fool had left it on the steps, waiting for someone to snatch it.
Pissed as I was I went to install it and for the life of me can't remember if I disconnected the battery before removing the old one and replacing with the new one.
I'm guessing that I forgot to disconnect the battery because of the mood I was in.
Still no luck. I tried putting the key into the driver's side door and see if that will somehow reactivate what was probably disabled. All that did was bring the windows down. Had to stop.
So what ever had happened, not only prevents the key from going all the way in, also prevents the keyless transmitter from functioning. The anti-theft led is blinking.
I'm trying to see if it's a fuse issue or relay issue. Most likely caused by forgetting to disconnect the battery when I was installing the new ignition.
