you can add photos by uploading them to a photo sharing site like photobucket.
copy the image URL then paste them here.

the stain is pretty common, as we believe it develops by leaving the mirror heating element on for too long.

it's oxidation between the mirror and the backing it's on.

it is not the heating element being left on...i live in san diego, never had my car in snow, have never had my heating element even turned on and i have the oxidation on both mirrors.

i replaced my passenger side mirror since it was worse, and before i installed the new one i put silicone sealant all around the perimeter to seal out any water/salt air. i've had it for a few months with no oxidation now.

Im not sure how it can be oxidation. My mirrors have no stains and I live in socal.

how does it look with the silicone? I would hope it doesnt look ugly?

it's all based on how it comes out of the factory, i could literally see it between the layers it wasn't even on the outside. it's a pretty rude process to manufacture those together.

i was worried about the look too, you can't even tell. i did an even layer all the way around and then used an exacto knife to get any high spots. came out better than i thought. i always blow all water out from behind the mirror when i wash the car too so it doesn't gather.

reason for you not having it (most likely): i've always lived within 7 miles of the beach and for a while i worked half a mile from the beach. the salt air could def be the cause. this is just going off your profile saying alhambra

yeah I live in alhambra. I dont go to the beach areas too often so maybe that has some kind of effect, but that would just be speculation.

my car originally came from Kansas, as I still have the Jay Wolfe Acura sales sheet from 2006.
I bought the car in 2010 in Texas.

<----- No oxidation or burn marks on either mirrors.
(hoping I didnt just Jinx myself )

How did you guys replace the mirror? I saw videos online and apparently you can just "pry" it off of the backing/heating element. Was it a difficult swap? I just picked up an '07 with the same marks on the driver's side mirror and saw the new glass for about $50 from Honda. I was thinking about doing this soon. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

It's very easy to do and prying it off with a flathead screwdriver is all I used. Then the new one simply snaps in place.

I've done this as well as I had the same issue. Very easy to do - took about 10 minutes and all I needed was a flat head screwdriver.

I don't live near a beach(like you lucky ones) and this car never saw the light of day in the winter...

unexplainable i guess...
