Squealing Brakes

Recently changed my pads after squealing by the supposedly top-rated Akebono pads were half worn. Swapped them for the Centric semi-metallics 10610010 and the squeaking got worse. Paul sanded the rotor surfaces yesterday in an attempt to get the glaze off them and now I feel like I'm driving a chalkboard and my brake pedal is a fingernail. Do I have to have the rotors resurfaced professionally or do I have to buy new rotors? The existing ones have plenty of meat still left on them.

I was never successful with resurfacing rotors back in the day. Recommend getting new rotors at this point with fresh pads. I've been running centric blanks on all my vehicles with ceramic pads to prevent squealing honestly.

He did ya like he did that guy with the 5AT -> 6MT swap!

Did you or Paul try to rebed the brakes? That usually works if theres still meat on them.

Those who try to convert a 5AT to a 6MT wind up with suicidal tendencies!

Anytime I had squealing brakes over the years were either solved with additional "lube", cleaning all of the shims and such, and/or re-bedding the pads.

I loved finding the clover-leaf interchanges nearby for brake bedding. People had to think I was crazy. Come around the leaf, full throttle, brake hard, come around the leaf, full throttle, brake hard, and repeat until squishy....then head out on the open highway to let things cool back down.

bed the rotors and bads and they should be a lot better. Semi-metallics can make noise when cold but should be gone by operating temps.

I had a similar issue with Duralast rotors and Max semi-metallic pads. They would squeak/grind easing off the brakes from a stop. I warrantied them, but I had the same issue so I thought I had to rebuild my calipers. Fast forward a year, and I decided to warranty the pads and buy new Duralast rotors. Autozone no longer sells the Max pads so they gave me Gold ceramics. No more squealing/grinding noises from a stop.

Problem finally solved! Replaced rotors with suggestions from Paul and my best bud from high school who owned an auto parts store for 25 years. They were good for about a half a day before they started squealing, only now worse than before. This morning, I replaced the garbage Centric semi-metallics which also blackened my wheels with Wagner ThermoQuiets. Had these pads once before and they were good. My high school bud says he never liked Centric's quality on any of their stuff.

Is all the hardware and pad shims on? Do the shims and hardware have copper antisieze or high temp lube between the shims and al lthe metalic contact points? Did you bed the new brake/rotor setup?

Is the tech using the proper grease in the right areas?

Is it a normal brake squeal? Or more like a rusty gate?
One of my buddy's 6MT TLs did that from the Brembos even after a fresh brake job - exact same noise. Could never narrow it down before he totalled it.

Sounds like you're doing everything right. I'd probably lose my mind too if this shit didn't stop after all those parts...

I may go that far if it keeps up!

Normal ( if you can call it that) brake squeal. If you've ever seen the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, then you know what I mean when I start talking like HAL when he's getting disconnected, "My Mind is Going, I Can Feel it, I Can Feel it!"

Are the pins that hold the pad into the caliper loose/worn? They could allow the pad to vibrate slightly...

are you able to tell if it is coming from the front or back? you have the brembos right? i had this nasty squeak that would happen no matter what brake pads i swapped them to. it would squeak like 5% of the time but it was loud AF

eventually (after a few years) i figured it out. whoever did the first brake job put the brembo retaining clip (looks like a plus sign) facing the wrong way. so all the people after that also put it in the wrong way because thats how it was when they disassembled it. just had to turn it right side up (or down) and the problem went away

good luck

Paul put new retaining clips on today. There's no way to tell which way is up or down. Waiting to see how long I can go without squealing

Like the back inside cover of my favorite magazine (MAD) says every month inside the back cover,
"Here We Go With Another Ridiculous MAD Fold-In"

I can't stop the squeaking! Just ordered new pins, the ones that hold the pads in place. So once again, Stay Tuned!

A quick review of what I replaced: Wagner ThermoQuiet Pads, Raybestos rotors, new clips, a slobber of CRC Disc Brake Quiet on the shims an the backs of the pads. I've used these pads before with no problem.
