Spark Plug Exploded?

Hey guys, im not much of a car guy so im here looking for an answer to what happened to me earlier today. I was on the highway when i heard a huge noise which sounded close to a shotgun. I looked in my rear view mirror and i saw a small piece fly from under my car, and all of a sudden i heard a bum bum bum noise. I get towed to my mechanic and he tells me that the actually entire plug/coil is gone and there is no threading inside. Not sure if im being played or not, but hes charging me a decent amount for a specialist to do a "heating coil". Please help me out lol

You're probably referring to a "Heli-Coil" or a "Time-Sert" thread insert. These products allow for the repairing of a cylinder head which has had the threads responsible for holding the spark plugs in place stripped out.

Note, your spark plug didn't explode per-se, what happened was the plug loosened in its hole and rattled around enough to destroy the threads and then get blown out of the hole because of the power of the combustion gasses.

Final note: in addition the the Heli-Coil or Time-Sert insert, you're also going to need a new spark plug and ignition coil.

Apparently your mechanic has never looked under the hood of many Ford 2004-2008 Ford vehicles with the 5.4 liter 3-Valve V8. That said, the Honda J-Series is somewhat known for loose spark plugs; the recommendation is to retorque them every oil change or so.

many people on acurazine, report the same as you. funny knocking noise (air escaping) then BOOM! plug ejects into hood taking along the coilpack and denting the hood.

I would check the plugs about every 10K miles on my 3G. There was always at least one that wasn't to torque specs. I don't seem to have the same problem with the 4G however. They've always stayed tight. Not sure why the difference.

BTW, I would consider picking up a used coil pack from eBay or somewhere like that. They're all over. You can usually get them around $20-$30 or less. New will cost much more:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2004-2008-ACURA-TL-OEM-ENGINE-IGNITION-COIL-PACK-USED-INTACT/252077003596?hash=item3ab0f5d34c:g:bxIAAOSw0JpV5fH V&vxp=mtr

I purchased a used one from a local scrap yard when it went out on my 2005 Toyota Sienna. Worked for another 60K before I sold the van. Coil packs don't go out often.

I've changed spark plugs twice now (@ 106K and @ 215K). I used the SM procedure of anti-seize and 13 ft-lbs. I never touched them after that and have never had a problem, nor were any plugs loose when it came time to change them.

That might be my problem. I never use anti-seize.

It is coming from reading numerous reports of them coming loose on some J-Series engines; I've read about it here as well as on the various Honda forums I've participated in.

Regarding the Service Manual procedure of using Anti-Seize; I don't have a service manual for either my TL or my J30 Accord; can you post the exact language for my reference?

They've come lose on my wife's 2009 Pilot as well. Not very loose. Literally 1/4 to 1/3 turn to get it back to spec. And I've only had to tighten them twice over the last three years.
