Solution for road noise? experiences and/or thought experiments

Hey yall

I'm growing on my 07 TL's V6................... but I would go V8 any day, given my wallet would let me

but there is one thing that I keep comparing it to my previous cars.

DANM road noise.
(yes the one where tire hits ground, and you hear it)

now bottom line : i'm not gonna change my tires. i love the hydroplaning resistance and all around hot grip of Conti DWS.

and a car guru of mine told me, when he had his car "done right", it helped a lot,
and here's the list of what he did.

1. cut the dynamat or whatever sound deadening material into 1"x2"(inch) pieces.

2. put about 10~15 of those pieces inside fender (of course, take off fender liner plastics)

3. mask all holes&harnesses&cavities

4. spray undercoating material

5. spray 3 times.

Since I've got 6 sq ft of leftover "ballistic" mat and 48 hours to kill, I'm thinking about doing that,,,

has anyone done anything to kill the road noise??

I don't want to dynamat the firewall and floor becuz then it'd be too heavy and make my TL even slower :/

I thought about doing this too, after researching car forums, some people say it works great, as usual there is a downside, costs, but since you already have some why not. Also I heard it weights alot. Putting it in the fender would be great, I don't know how well it would hold up to moisture tho. Also I'd be pissed if I spent all that time and effort and got into an accident or for what ever reason needs painting, all that would have to be removed, that's my only concern. The A pillars are great to have them done.

i'm only gonna put small pieces so won't even use 1 sq ft for both front fender inside.

A pillar?? hmmm gotta do that too xd

I have a 2004 Acura TL and I have the same problem. I have tried everything and I have been going back and forth with the Dealer about it. I have been replacing my tires twice a year and in 6 months with proper balance and rotation my tires are wearing bad and it is very noisy. I did some research and I was told by Acura that the this problem is common on all TL's because of the European style handing suspension this car eats tires and they are noisy. I was told do not use directional tires on this car because it will make noise, as a matter of fact Acura put a set of non directional tires on my car to show me that the noise went away. so they said I had to change to non directional tires and with proper balance and rotation and alignment the noise should be at a minimum. I haven't tried this yet but I hope this Information helps.

every word counts! thanks.

1. DWS is not directional. it's just asymmetric so I think I should be fine in that sense.
but then,, the previous michelin pilot A/S sports was directional but it wasn't that loud (at least i think.... i might not remember correctly)

2. european (i assume that means firm?) suspension causes road noise? pfft acura.

that's just excuse for not engineering it enough and/or not caring of soundproofing enough.

just comparing suspension, 5.7 and 6.1 300Cs hve same exact soundproofing materials, 6.1 was not louder with exact same set of tires.
255 45 20, Nitto NT420S - yes i know, poor tire for the hp, but yea.

**6.1 is SRT version with lowered, firmer suspension. it was little harsher than the TL i drive right now (07 with revised ride comfort)

3. my tires are 3000 miles old from brand new, with alignment.
i don't think rotation will do much but i will try that

There are spray-able under coatings that also deaden sound. Used it on the '02 Maxima I used to have and it made a noticeable difference after I coated the inside of the rear fender wells. Took a full can but it was only $8. It also re-blackened the fender wells so it made the car look better as well. I had planned on using it under the trunk mat too, but the car got totaled before I could do that.

Stiffer bushings in a "sport" suspension will increase road noise considerably. It was immediately evident when test driving a standard IS350 and the one with the sport suspension. If you've ever had the windshield replaced and not gone with the factory acoustiglass you will experience more road noise (yes, road noise).Tires are the number one contributor. Tires are very easy to replace, sound deadening is not. I've deadened my entire car and tires still make a larger difference. My entire interior has been out, everything is covered in vibration mat and Second Skin Luxury Liner Pro sound blocker. It made a nice difference but not as much as a quiet set of tires will make. It also added over 100lbs to the car.

Stiffer springs won't transfer more road noise. Stiffer bushings will.

Not just any Michelin will be quiet. Much cheaper tires that are just as quiet.

lol and then i have problem stopping in rain. (relatively)

anyway..

so i pasted little patches of deadening material since i didn't want to add whole bunch of weight, i put like 10 patches of 1"x2" pieces.

and coated twice,,, boring job. indeed.

anddddddd the result ...... not worth it.

I had to bring out my jack and jack stands take the wheel off, do the job, put the back on and I am not strong enough for 80lb-ft ahaha

.................................................. .................................................. ........................

question for IHC.

If, the stiffer bushings transfer road noise,,

why did my previous SRT had crispier (and more responsive) steering wheel than current non-S TL???

so far i remeber, it had 14.4:1 steer ratio and a bigass steering wheel.

when i wiggle it on highway, it'd turn into a state fair ride.

TL doesn't. it just wiggls wheel, but still goes straight

BUT i gotta admit, this TL is pretty damn close to what I loved in the big oil rig sedan.

(I'm not arguing, I admire your knowledge and experience, and would like to get answers)
