smell/odour while driving or accelerating?
Hi guys,
I think someone out there can help with this question: when I step on the gas hard while driving i can smell something like a sulfur (egg smell, the same smell when you go to a hot spring). I thought this would be a sign of my transmission going. so i searched this site for signs of bad transmission they don't say anything about a smell. yesterday i was driving at 120km per hour under cruise control I smelled the same odour again it lasted about 5-10 seconds then it dispeaered. Is it the engine? no lights are on, no flashing d drive, etc. Could anyone explain this, I never had a car smell like that sulfur smell when drive or accelerate hard especially when i am sitting in the driver seat? at least should be coming from the rear end or exhaust?
Any idea?

That smell is in fact sulfur. There is sulfer in fuel additives. Your catalytic converter is getting excessiyely hot. Could be a sign of too rich fuel mixture or your cat is starting to clog. The sulfur is stored in the cat and when you hit the throttle, it dislodges and escapes through the exhaust.
Try switching gas stations or move up to high test if you're not doing that now. Also, if you do a lot of stop and go driving, take the car out for a nice run on the highway and open her up a bit.

this is serious stuff- go immediatly to a muffler shop for inspection or take it to the dealer
In USA there is 80,000mile warranty on cat, and nearly that on most emission equipment
If the cat is plugged or running hot for some reason- that bad for the engine and wont pass smog test...thats the line acura uses to decide- will it pass smog? then something is wrong and probably warranty on a gen3
Call acura Canada and ask what the spcifics are on the exhaust warranty, then get it to the dealer
Cruising at 120k (~80mph) is nothing-it will do that and more all day long without issue. Full throttle runs to max rpm you can get it to- for 20 minutes,,that will cook the cat

Sometimes it's not that big of a problem. But agreed, you should get it checked if changing gas and blowing it out doesn't get rid of the smell.
Another warning... if a clogged cat gets hot enough, you could actually see it glowing red in the dark and light a cigarette off of it.

I am due to renew my sticker in the next two weeks and that requires an emission test? the question I should do the emission test and find out that my cat is going, or go to London Honda where i bought my car and have them inspect my cat. How would I know that the cat is going? just going to a muffler shop?
