Side Mirror Judders When In Reverse

My passenger side mirror just started juddering (shaking) when I put the car it in reverse. The mirror is supposed to lower itself to see the curb when backing up and it used to. Now itsjudders for up to 30 seconds before finally stopping. I heard there is a sinent recall on this. Anyone know about this problem?

its a common issue, go to your dealer and they will replace the mirror assembly for you.

Free actuator replacement for those of you under warranty. Regular old spray white lube for those of you who arent. Angle the mirrror so you can get the little red tube back behind the mirror and give the posts a good douching. Should do the trick (at least for a while)

Have any of you tried doing what KINEMATRIX suggested in that thread? It worked for a few people. No money or hassle involved.

went to the dealer today...

the tech came out and just moved the mirror (using the button) all the way up, then all the way down, all the way right, all the way left. This didn't work the first time, but he did it a few more times and it worked.

Did he say "Abra-Cadabra" before he pushed the button? If he did, I can believe that fixed it!

if its the crack crack crack crack noise the threads are shot on the backside of the mirror...if u still have warranty get it done. they did both of mine... when it happened the drivers side mirror had rust in it. it was eating through the reflective material.

yeah i was trying to get mine replaced and he was ready to do so, but then he was like actually let me try it a couple more times and somehow he got it to work. i didnt really feel like pushing them on the issue as I was there to get an estimate for the scratch/dent I got from a couple of weekends ago. in any case, i know what they did is a temp. solution, so i'll just wait for it to start juddering again (probably before the end of the week) before i go back and complain

I hope they at least documented the issue on your invoice... This way they might consider goodwilling it if it acts up again and your warranty has expired.

This may work. Moves the actuator pins to locations they dont see often are picks up some fresh lube which in turn stops the juddering. Lemme know how long it lasts. I like it. Just curious to see how long it lasts. See even us know it alls can learn a thing or two. < That ones for me!

I pushed my side mirror up until it clicked a few times and then down until it clicked..works just fine now. We'll see how long it'll hold until I'll have to go to the dealer...

well this started happening again a few weeks ago. im a little disappointed, but by the method they attempted to fix the issue its understandable. looks like there is now a service bulletin out (Feb 09) that *indirectly* states to replace just the actuators. will have to go to the dealer for this.

I did this exact thing a few weeks ago and it fixed my problem as well without having to take a trip to the useless dealer. Forgot to post back up so that others can know that this worked for me.

I had this problem when I first got my cpo tl... Did the same thing myself and haven't had an issue since. Give it a try if you're having the issue.

Worked for me i just went out and tried it .The mirror operates much smoother I recommend any one who has this issue to at least give the up, down, left ,right method a try it took all of three minutes to fix.And to think I've been thinking about ordering a replacent mirror off of ebay I am glad this topic came up. I just hope that the fix lasts. Thanks Aziner's the forum fixes yet another issue saving me a trip to the dealership.

It's caused by dust getting caked on the grease for the control rods. This causes them to jam up. The actuator has torque overload protection and that's the "click click" sound your hearing. This keeps the parts from breaking if the mirror gets stuck or someone simply pushes on it with their fingers. No the gears are not stripping, no parts are not breaking.

Moving the mirror back & forth in all directions scrapes the dust off and shifts the lube around making it smooth again.

This will always happen again later, but it's not a big deal. Just move the mirror in opposite directions and it will come back to life...
