severe hesitation with gear dash light flickering??

Hello. I'm hoping somebody can offer some advice. My wife's 2005 Tl Has been exhibiting odd hesitation during normal driving. When it happens, she says the car feels like it's going to shut off and notices that the gear selector lights in the dash go off or flicker. I'm wondering if it's possible it could be the gear selector or the neutral position senor ? Has anyone had this happen?

Is the check engine light blinking? Sounds like a misfire meaning bad spark plugs

No. When the car hesitates, it feels like it's lost power, and the gear indicator light will go off for the same amount of time it's hesitating.. Actually I changed the spark plugs about a month ago. The car the car has been doing this on and off for the last year or so. Really wondering if it could be the neutral safety switch

I'd be willing to bet it's the range switch on the side of the trans.
