Seized 6MT Caliper

Hey guys,

I recently replaced my rotors and brake pads. During instalation if could not remove the caliper bolts. In the end they came out and the caliper threads were seized.

I re-threaded the caliper and put in the bolt.

This morning im driving to my buddy shop to get my new tires mounted and get an alignment done, i hear like an explosion, i thought my tire exploded, but i get out and the tire is fine. i start driving again and when i hit the brakes, the car is hardly braking and making a horrendous noise.

I arrived at my buddy shop and noticed that my caliper top bolts fell and the caliper was dragging on the rim.

Now my buddy who is a Master tech at lexus said we can use helic oul and put in a bolt, but he said rather get a new caliper.

What are your guys insight on this? whoe ver experianced this.

I think the knuckle will have to be removed & the threads repaired (heli-coil or etc.) at a good machine shop.

I'm 99.99% positive there are no threads on the hub. I had a similar issue, except 3/4 bolts completely stripped out. I brought them to a friend to have him try and drill/helicoil them but after running around ALL day trying to find helicoils for the stock bolts he was able to just retap the factory thread pitch and bolt size. They went in well and I used some thread locker so hopefully were good. I'm just scuuuuured for when I have to do rotors again :-/

My buddies 2004 had cross-threaded calipers from the factory this seems to be more common as we start doing brake jobs. Would have been nice to find under warranty.

Hey guys. I am not messing with all the helic coils. I could not find M14 x1.50 only 1.25. My threads were real bad. I found a local junk yard that has the caliper i need for $125 in A condition. He is going to check the threads for me and if they are good i will pick that one up. If this happens on the highway, it can be a disaster.

Thanks for all your help.

Correct, it's the caliper that is threaded.

This sucks that this has happened to others. I thought it was just me.
I call around and found the caliper for 417.00 everywhere new.

I ended up going to a machine shop and we tapped it 9/16 threads.
It worked out fine for twenty dollars.
You would need to order a heli-coil, most shops won't have anything that large in metric.

I won't mess with the heli-coil on a caliper.
It could cost well over 100.00 just to get two them installed properly.

That is why I went to the next available bolt size.
All said and done for 20.00.

If you would rather replace the caliper, go for it.
But for other people who don't have the access, this is a much more affordable option and it is a quick fix.

Yep. I found a caliper with perfect threads for $125 at a local junkyard. Installed it and no worries. If the caliper falls off again and it happens at high speeds, caliper will press against the rim and might not let it turn=Disaster
