Seat Swap question

Hello, I would like to say thank you for the people who made a lot of threads about fixes and stuff. Helped me a lot with some issues I had when I bought my 06 TL. Decided to create an account and make this thread since I couldn’t find any direct answer to my question and had no one else to ask. I own an 06 Base TL tech package with 75k miles and my driver’s seat has an annoying clicking sound whenever I hit the gas and accelerate or hit the brakes. I can reproduce the clicking sound by also moving around in the seat. My first thought was a loose bolt or something lose under the seat or just something loose under the track assembly so I took it to a upholstery shop to get it check. They took apart the seat and put it back in place but the clicking sound is still present. They said my best bet is to swap the seat out with another or get a new seat track. I chose to first option and found a clean 2004 TL driver seat at a junkyard. My question is has anyone tried swapping an 06 seat with an 04 seat without issues? Would it work (without splicing any wires) or would I be wasting my time? Thank you.

I figured it would be different. I read somewhere 05+ were redesigned a bit differently, just didn’t know if it would work or give me codes. I wanted confirmation from someone that tried it and their experience before I even waste my time unscrewing my seat to check.

have you checked the seat part numbers by year?

At one time I was going to swap the seats between my old 04 and 05 TLs. They would bolt up just fine, but the seat belts were not compatible, IIRC. No idea about the 2006, though.

When you said the seat belts were not compatible do you mean your TL seat belt wouldn’t lock in the new seat buckle? If yes couldn’t you just swap the buckle from the old seat with the new seat or it does not work like that?

Mounting position of the seat belts changed in 2005.

Hi, can you elaborate how that affects how the seat belt wouldn’t be compatible with an 04 seat?

csmeance posted this in a thread when I replaced my buckles, and he explains it pretty well. Where are you going to mount your seat belt, as you don't have a spot on the b-pillar in an 2006 TL?

IIRC the belt spool on the 2004 was mounted to the B-pillar, but in the 2005 it was built into the seat itself. I might have been able to disassemble the seats and swap parts between them, but the B-pillar in the 2005 probably wasn't threaded for the spool. I decided that it wasn't worth the effort. You might decide differently.

Thank you I just saw another thread that talked about the mounting position. I didn’t know they made it that much of a pain to work on.

I mean, you're trying to put a different model year seat into your car and expecting it to work; i wouldn't call that "a pain to work on" ..

You want a pain, try replacing the timing belt yourself
