Unhappy RPM Fluctuates Under WOT

Hello Members,

I tried searching for this before and maybe I'm not using the right words but I really have no idea what's going on. For the past two days whenever I floor it for fun when entering the freeway my RPMs in my '08 TL-S 6MT would dip at certain points. After trying to replicate the problem I can get it to consistently lower itself and/or pause a little between 3.5K and 5K RPMs. I started thinking it was the VSA so I tried this with the VSA on and off and I'm still getting the same problem. I'm not sure if this an issue or if it has something to do with the LSD. This is my first car with LSD and VSA but I've been driving it for over a year without running into this. Usually I get smooth acceleration for as long as my foot is down but now the RPMs and vehicle speed both take "breaks" between 50-80MPH. I'll appreciate any help. Thanks in advance!

Any CELs with this? Have you checked the connections on the coil packs (meaning the clips that hold the harness onto the coil packs)? Just a thought (my brother had the same problem with his 300ZX and under acceleration, it was bogging down - he realized the problem, and one of the coil pack harnesses was nearly disconnected from the coil pack).

I haven't seen a CEL with the issue. Also this morning I tried again and when I pressed the pedal down all the way at 60mph in 3rd the RPMs went to redline, I shifted into 4th and the RPMS went to redline again BUT my car only went from 60mph to 75mph while going through the entire range of both 3rd and 4th gear.

How would I know if it's the clutch slipping? Seems a little premature on a car with less than 60k miles.

^classic symptom of slipping clutch.
RPMS will increase but speed stays same.

A clutch is a wear and tear item.
it can go out at 2k miles or it can last 200k miles.

it just depends on how well it has been treated.
IE: no riding the clutch.

Thank you, starting at 43k miles I became the 2nd owner so that is an unfortunate possibility. I tried to test it by driving normally from 1st to 2nd and then skip to flooring it in 6th to see if the clutch slips then and it never did. Is that an accurate test? It's just what my mechanic told me to try after getting off the phone with him.

^right, at first it will slip in higher gears.
as the clutch material heats up or gets worse, it'll eventually slip in lower gears.

the most simplest test is flooring it in a higher gear.
you've already confirmed this test by making a thread about it "RPM fluctuates in higher RPM"

OP - aren't you saying in your first post that the engine is hesitating? (RPMs bogging down.) It sounds to me like you're describing a different problem than the one everyone is addressing.

I read this statement here -

... but then you said it wasn't slipping in a different test. If your clutch was causing the issues you listed above - it would happen all the time. Plus - if the clutch was really that bad, you'd definitely be getting slip while taking off from a standing stop.

So - don't swap out the clutch just yet. You need to bring in a professional on this one.

I had the same issue a few times and was considering the check valve in the slave cylinder along with really quick gear changes ( ie-off the clutch and on the gas hard and fast) as a possible culprit. Although I did jump the gun and now have a fx300 clutch and flywheel waiting to go in lol. But it seems the only time I was able to reproduce it was quick off the clutch and hard on the gas in higher gears and have never noticed it all in the recent past with normal and mildly spirited driving. Just a thought.
