Rotor pad recommendation

Looking to do a front brake job on 07 TL. Wondering if anyone can recommend a specific rotor/pad kit or combo. I could just get the stock from Acura parts or OEM from Napa, but wondering about any recommendations. I don't need high performance, just looking to not pay Acura $600 for couple of hundred in parts and an hour of my time. thanks

Second that ^

Rockauto.com is the cheapest place I've found for Centric rotors irrespective the model ie: blank, premium, slotted etc:.

Hey guys I am also in the market for some new brakes for my "new to me " 2006 TL 6MT. Is the below setup complete garbage or is it actually decent? I absolutely do not want a setup hat produces a lot of dust or noise so I will look into the recommended package of which you are referring to.

POWER STOP Part # KOE2718 Autospecialty; Incl. 12.2 in. Front & 11.1 in. Rear OE Replacement Rotors w/Z16 Ceramic Scorched Pads Click Info for full list of components.
Front and Rear; w/Brembo Front Caliper

$154.79

Guys, is this the rotor you are referring to? Since I have a 6 speed manual in my '06 TL, aren't my front rotors larger than the standard TL? I think I might have heard that they are the same rotors and caliper as the Type S cars but I cannot be certain. Can someone confirm if these are the correct rotors and what size I need?

CENTRIC Part # 12540046 High Carbon Alloy
Front; Standard Front Caliper$49.79

I am looking to install myself and am looking for any advise or tips possible. Thanks guys!

You want the Centric 125.40062 for $50.79 each for the Brembo's. Those are their top of the line non slotted or drilled. For pads I'd still recommend Duralast Cmax for like $50 at autozone, stoptech 309.10010 for $55.89 from rockauto.

I'd say the stoptech are a better pad. However, with the Duralast you can wear them out and take them back to autozone and get a brand new pair

That is absolutely correct.

Are you sure you need new rotors? I mic'd mine I have 120k on my original rotors and both fronts are within .020" of factory thickness. At this rate they'll last 300k.

I am not positive if I need new rotors but I do know the pads are shot. I am kind of one of those guys that likes to do everything at once for piece of mind, especially considering I bought the car pre-owned and have no idea what brand or grade it currently has on it.

So just to clarify, my car has the 6 speed MT and I for sure need the 125.40062 for the front rotors, correct?

Does anyone know the correct part number for the rear rotors in the same model?

I haven't researched the install for brakes front and rear for my car but I am assuming it is pretty straightforward for the most part. Is there a write up hanging around someone could point me to?

On a good note, the dealership I bought the car from did a complete brake fluid flush and fill so that is out of the way

I know their is a write up somewhere, but I'm not sure where. Probably, in the old 3g "Garage" sticky. The only issue I ran into was those damn phillips screws that are a bitch to get out. Get an impact screwdriver that you hit with a hammer or just drill them out like I did. They're not necessary.

Rear rotors for the Centric's are 125.40061, they're the same for auto and 6MT.

125.40062 are their premium blank rotors with the black e-coating same with the 125.40061 rears.

I'm sure there's a write up in the old 3g "Garage" sticky, but it's pretty straight forward. The only issue I had was the damn phillips screws that hold the rotors on. You can either get an impact screwdriver that you hit with a hammer or just drill them out like I did as they're unnecessary.

Right, I figured the rears were the same for both the Type S and std TL cars, but my car is 6MT as mentioned and has the all black front calipers with "ACURA" in white letters on them. I believe I heard someone say these are the same as the 12.2" Type S? I guess I am just wanting clarification for the size I need to run.

Also, in regards to the pads:
What did my car come with from the factory, ceramic? I also would like to know what you guys think of the Centric C-Tek Premium line of pads. I ran the semi-metallic on the SC300 and absolutely loved them. Are the AutoZone pads really that good or do you guys like them because you can replace them for free?

I am looking for as low dust and I absolutely want ZERO squealing....pad squeal literally drives my crazy!

I have the Brembo's too so I've done extensive research on rotors and pads. the centric 125.40062 are 310mm or 12.2047244.... inches diameter.

I believe the OEM Brembo pads are semi-metallic, but not sure about that. They are however quite soft, hence the high amount of dust and short lifespan. As far as the Cmax they are very low dust, and absolutely no squealing as they have a little rubber shim on the back.

Just make sure you bed them in good, always bed new pads even if you're not replacing rotors.

I just called my local Autozone and he said they don't make anything for my car called the "CMAX". He said the highest-grade ceramic is the Duralast Gold Max. Is this the same pad you are referring to?

I think this setup sounds amazing...Centric C-Tek Premium rotors w/E-Coating and the CMAX pads.

Yeah, the Duralast Gold according to autozone's website are still called Duralast Gold Cmax. Link: Duralast Gold Cmax/Brake Pads - Front DGC1049 at AutoZone.com
It looks like O'reilly's carry's the exact same pads just under a different name: Brakebest Select Ceramic for $58.99.

And I was going to get the Centric 125.40062 myself. So, I'd get them still if my rotors needed replacing.

Awesome man...thanks so much for the recommendation.

Again, this setup we are talking about is an extremely low dust and virtually no squeal setup, correct?

I only get a very tiny squeal when I reverse and hit the brake, but they never squeal otherwise. Also, the dust is almost nonexistent compared to the OEM, or even the Rotex Kevlar pads I used to have that gave off an ugly brown dust.

I think you will be happy with that setup. Like I said just make sure to bed them in.

Sorry, this is likely an ignorant question, but I have never heard the term "bed them in". What exactly are you referring to?

So just for reference, it looks like Amazon actually has the best price on the rotors shipped

Amazon - $209.72 shipped
Rockauto - $217.42 shipped

Although I have ordered parts from both sites before, does anyone know which site offers faster shipping?

The "Duralast Gold Ceramic Pads" AKA "CMAX" (according to CRBN) were $50 for the fronts and roughly $40 for the rears to make a grand total of *roughly* $290 shipped to my front door.

Even though I am getting some amazing advice from experience here, the little frugal person inside of me is telling me to just get the Powerstop "kit" that is like $180 shipped. However, I have been around the block enough an made enough poor decisions with parts to now that you pay for what you get. I look at this Centric/CMAX setup as a perfect middle ground. I will hopefully convince the wife to order this gear soon even though we need brakes front and rear for our Mazda Tribute. I was planning on running all Centric CTEK gear for the Mazda. Please chime in if otherwise suggested.

Brake bedding: Instructions for bedding in your brakes
After reading fully through that I'd definitely drive and let them cool for more than a "few" minutes; I personally let them cool for 15-20.

Yeah, that makes sense the rotors are heavy, and rockauto shipping can get pricey.

If you sign up for amazon prime free 30 day trial you get free 2nd day delivery. Just make sure to cancel as I made that mistake years ago, and was charged $75 for a years membership I never once used again.

Autozone is weird, in my location it shows their pads for $76. My friend was stuck in IN and I looked for alternators in that zip and then I searched for the pads which were $46 there. It must be were they ship them from that affects the price.

For rear pads I'd personally go with a cheaper ceramic pad myself. I'm on my original rears with over a 1/4 pad left.

I'd go Centric personally if you're not going OEM, Centric makes StopTech rotors and pads that are also good.

So I can get Prime for free for 30 days, order my gear and then cancel right after with no repercussions?

I didn't read all the fine print, but it says you can get a free 30 days and cancel anytime before those 30 days without being charged.

You can also save a little more and get the Centric 120.40061 for the rear rotors. They are $10 cheaper on Amazon. They still have the e-coating but aren't as high carbon as the 125 series, but for rears you could almost use any rotor as they don't do a lot of the stopping.

^agree, but the rear rotors tend to warp if you do a lot of highway driving where there are offramps where you need to sit at 70MPH-0MPH. I put Racing Brake Slotted Rotors on all 4 corners and love them.

I wouldn't recommend slotted for the rears, they chew up pads 2x as fast as the front.

I use the Centric e-coated rotors (meaning they won't rust the non-braking surfaces) and Wagner Thermo-Quiet Semi Metallic pads, which are only $25 from rockauto. Adequate stopping power, no dust. Why spend more?

rule of thumb is if your rotor is't warp then it does not need to be replaced, unless its super thin compare to factory spec. I replace mine because at the time its warped.

Installed the Centric rotors and Duralast Cmax pads last night. Saved a bundle from dealer price. Easy except of one b#tch of a caliper bolt that hung on until the PB set in. Thanks again for the advice.

How long total did install take? I assume you went with the same combo we have been discussing here?

if you did what OP goes through its around 1 hour for a southern car, however if your car been driven in snow state where salt is present then prepare your self for a time frame of grunting and screamming.

Yeah, the job is relatively quick. For me it was probably two hours total with much of that waiting for PB to loosen caliper bolt and fighting with one inside pad to slide into position. Salt everywhere.

does autozone really give you a life time free pad?

since brake pads are wear and tear items. i thought the life time warranty only covers manufacturing defects not wear and tear.

My sister's 06.5 Optima with 210k is on it's fourth set on Autozone's cheapest pads. Her husband just takes the worn pads in and walks out with brand new ones. He doesn't even need the receipt.

I asked the guy and he said yes. Took down my information and entered it into my profile in their computer. I asked if I just stop back for the next set and he said yes. We will see.

Yup autozone does give you free pad after the first set. My brother is on his 3rd set with the lexus right now.

Does anyone have any idea if the Centric Premium Ceramic or Centric Posi-Quiet pads are worse or better than the Duralast Gold/Cmax?

I am just looking for the lowest dust and no noise application. I don't really keep cars long enough to worry about a lifetime replacement, but I can definitely see myself keeping this TL for long enough to need to replace the pads again. Thoughts appreciated.

SO it's $72 to have my current rotors turned which someone has said "should" be OK. It would be $209.72 for the Centric High Carbon Rotors w/Free 2-day shipping through Amazon Prime. For only $1XX more, I could have piece of mind of having nice, brand new rotors to go along with my brand new pads. Am I crazy or is this the route I should probably go? I am going to order when I get home from work tonight so let me know guys!

if your rotors had never been resurfaced, then you can save some money by cutting it and buy new rotor next time. that should last you another 20-40k depending your driving style.

I have tested the AutoZone warranty on both the pads and rotors.
My front rotors began to pulsate and they had a 2 year warranty. I still had the receipts and brought them with but they weren't needed. Guy just looked up purchase by my phone number and swapped out my rotors, zero cost.
My front pads were replaced on the car as well. Same process except I can get replacements for life or as long as I own the car. Pads stop the same if not better than OEM, produce very little dust and are quiet. Only time I hear noise is first brake application after car sits after washing and it is the pads just cleaning the rotors off. By the time I get down my side street they are fine.

I am running Autozone Duralast CMAX and they were easy to install and are quiet. They do produce more dust than I expected but breaking is great and quiet. I did not turn my rotors since they were still very smooth and not warped.
