Reattaching a review mirror

The rear view mirror on my '04 TL fell off. Does anyone know the best way to reattach it? Is there a way to get the metal plate out and attach that using one of the kits from the auto parts store or should I head to the dealer?

Thanks!

This is a new one. Was the windshield ever replaced?

what part fell off- the entire mirror? seperate from the arm as if the ball itsewlf had broken- or the place the ball fits into broke?
on gen2 ( dont know 3s) the whole arm assembly and mirror is 1 unit- to get to its mounts you remove the dome light and then get to 2 screws
The locking plate- slides in from below- in the mirror replacement DIY its shows pushing that clip down from inside- gently so as not to break the windshield.
it comes out the bottem and the assembly can be pulled free

An auto glass shop can usually fix whatever probs you have- the dealer is more about replacing parts on a service than figuring out wierdness

How about a pic of whats happening!

The entire mirror fell off, it's hanging by a wire now. It's an '04 TL, so it's the latest generation (at least for a few more weeks).

I bought a fix-it kit at the local auto-parts store, but I was hoping there some easy way to get the metal plate out that attaches to the glass, I don't see any torx screws or anything like that. There's a small black plastic cover attached to the front of the arm, but it is glued on and there are aren't any screws underneath.

well, I tried the kit from the auto parts store, but it didn't work (I couldn't figure out how to get the metal plate out from the back of the arm, so I tried glueing the whole thing in place, after holding it for about 2 minutes it immediately fell off.

because (unless the made gen3 different) it doesnt glue to the windshield like a normal car
See the DIY on mirror replacement in Gen2 section and it will tell you exactly how to get it apart
If its hanging by a wire- it may have broken the actual plastic arm and base mount
Do you see and jagged edges?
Or take a trip back to the glass place and say- hey man my mirror fell off

here is the diy- scroll down for pics and scim the other pages for more pics

hi, thanks for the response, it actually does glue on like a "normal" mirror, there's a metal plate in the back of the arm. On most other cars I've seen there's some sort of screw that holds the arm to the plate, so you can take the plate off and glue it to the windshield. I don't see anything like that on my 3rd generation '04.

Anyway, the glass guy is coming tomorrow to reattach it for $15.
