Problems with alarm system
Hi everyone, I recently bought a 2006 tl NBP and i'm having some issues with the alarm system. The car came with a remote start system but for some reason the alarm will never work. However my battery recently died and when i went to jump start it the horn would beep like the alarm. I've looked through other threads but none of the advice there worked. (All my doors lock). Anyone have any ideas or possible fixes?

What are the issues you are having? How do you know the alarm isn't working? While the remote start may be related to the battery dying, the most common parasitic draw is the HFL going bad.
If the stock alarm doesn't arm, it's usually because it's seeing an open trigger somewhere (doors, hood, trunk). The most common issue is the hood switch going bad. It'll tell the BCM that the hood is always opened, and the security system will not arm if that's the case.
With that said, considering that you have an aftermarket remote starter installed, it is possible that the installer rigged the factory hood pin, or disarm wire to see a constant ground signal. They do this because they don't want the factory alarm to go off when the user goes to remote start the car. This is completely incorrect in terms of installation methods, but it's a shortcut that some people use when they don't want to properly integrate the factory security system to the aftermarket remote starter.
If you close everything (doors, hood, trunk) and lock the car with the factory remote, the little "security" light on the driver door should flash. If it doesn't, then the factory alarm isn't arming.

Thank you for the explanation, when i lock the car the little red light flashes by my driver side door. I was messing around with it today and i cant get it to work no matter what. For example I locked myself in the car and the red light was flashing, I then went to start the car and everything started up fine.
I would think that the alarm would go off? Also i read through a couple of the other threads where someone said try to lock yourself in the car and then pop the hood or trunk with the button and the alarm should go off but no luck that way either.
How would i go about diagnosing the hood switch?

I can't get the alarm to sound no matter what i try, when i lock the car with the key fob it doesn't beep even though i have it enabled in the settings where the trip computes and key settings are. All that i hear is sometimes a slight whine. I'm not sure if this can be related to the alarm not working?

If your security light is flashing, then that means that your alarm system is in fact arming when you lock the car. Trying to start it won't necessarily set off the alarm because you're starting it using a valid key with a valid transponder inside.
Also, keep in mind that the alarm system doesn't arm as soon as you see the light flashing. Give it approximately 20 seconds before you attempt to open a door or trunk. Also, don't attempt to set the alarm off by unlocking the door with the key from the outside...doing that disarms the alarm.
Best way to test it is this:
1. Sit inside the car, and lock it with the stock remote
2. Wait 20 seconds
3. Push the button on the lower dash to pop the trunk. The horn should sound, and lights should flash.

yes it seems to be working as it should. Do you by any chance know why my car wont beep when i lock it? i have checked the settings and it is turned on, when i lock the car i can hear a very quite whine but i don't know if it has to dow with the beep. Is there a unit or some kind of speaker the beep comes out of that i could check?
I am too, I see in your bio that your an electrical specialist. I've been having a few other issues that maybe you could have any ideas on?
First off, when i lock my car it doesn't beep only slightly gives a faint whine, i've double checked that it's enabled in the settings. Is there a unit or maybe a fuse i could check?
Also i've made a post questioning how i should go about installing a tilt sensor in my car. Would the wiring from the remote starter interfere with the tilt sensor? Is this something that I could take on myself? (I'm not very electrically inclined if you haven't noticed haha).Or should i just bring it to best buy car audio or something along those lines asking them to install it?
Thank you so much for your help by the way, all the other places i've been to haven't been of any assistance (Pepboys looked at me like i was from another planet when i asked about the tilt sensor)

When you press the lock button on your remote twice, assuming that all the doors/hood are closed, you will here a "beep" from a small piezo buzzer located in the fender. It isn't very loud at all, so chances are that what you're hearing is normal. It isn't anything close to what you'd hear in a lexus (which is very noticeable).
As for your tilt sensor question, Your remote starter will have no effect on your tilt sensor install. The only way it would affect it is if your remote start system was also an aftermarket security system. I don't recommend taking it to best buy for install as they are butchers that don't know much about 12volt electrical systems (at least here in toronto anyway). A place like pepboys wouldn't have the faintest clue as to what a digital tilt sensor is.
If you can get me the make and model of the remote start system you have installed in your car, I might be able to tell you how to wire up your tilt sensor.

I asked the person who sold the car to me and they sent me pictures of the box that the remote start came in. The brand name is "AutoStart" ModelAS2775 and also a box of some thing called a Xpresskit SoleX series and it says bypasskit Model XK05. If you need me to i can possibly find the wires that are running to the unit and take pictures.
I have called a few car audio specialized shops around me and i have gotten quoted 50-100 dollars just for the installation since i already have the unit. Am i getting ripped off? I may try to call some other shops a little farther out , it's just that I don't know how much installation for something like this would be.
