Proactive transmission rebuild?

Hi All,

Some changes in my life mean it is time to move on from my beloved 04 TL. I won't be able to get much money with over 223,000 miles on it and am considering 'selling' it to a family member that suddenly needs a dependable car.

I would feel awful if something happened under her watch after all these years of trouble free service under my watch. I will rebuild the brakes, replace all coolant hoses and radiator as I think this is simple and smart insurance (she lives four hours away so I will not be able to help do any emergency wrenching).

My question is about the transmission. I don't know what happens when these go out. Is it sudden or are there warning signs? Is there any reason to have it rebuilt proactively on my terms versus having it towed to the closest hack shop and hope for the best? Are there any upgrades aside from replacing the switches (I did do this about 50,000 miles ago).

Thanks for your thoughts and experience.

If its not giving you problems, I wouldnt worry about it. Do a fluid change and call it a day.
