Power steering loud

This may not even be a problem at all but every morning when I start my car the power steering is extremely loud. I've checked the fluid levels and put them where they should be using only honda fluid.

The noise goes away after about 3 or 4 minutes and doesnt return really all day...I can faintly hear it from time to time while normal driving but its not really that loud than.

Is this normal or should I be ready for a failure soon?

It's probably the o-ring on the inlet of the ps pump, it contracts in cold weater. When you start the car, open the cap on the PS reservoir.. if you see bubbles then it's definitely the o-ring.. remove the bolt on the inlet side, pull the o-ring and put in a new one. The new replacement o-rings are orange. It should take you 5 minutes.. replace it with the car off and some shop towels over the drivebelt to keep PS fluid from getting on it..

As Majofo stated, its prob the O ring. I had this problem and they wanted to replace the power steering pump, i refused and had them just perform the recall and this fixed the issue. PS pump was fine...

perfecto !!!!

i had the same problem in the past winter....i spoke to the dealer and they gave me an estimate to replace the ps pump.....i was outta warranty (so looking at $600) and i just came across this thread (some version of this thread) and saw the fix.....

went to the dealer....told them they forgot to put the o-ring back when the did the ps recall....they put it in there for free.....and damn no more noise.....

acurazine !!!

Wow! Thanks guys! I knew something was frickin leaking under my hood...

I took a rag and whiped up below and whiped up the actual resevior itself....there was fluid leaking everywhere...I wasnt sure if it was a hose or what but we definitely saw bubbles in the fluid and that got me thinking too. I will definitely replace the ring! =]

Do i need to order this ring from the acura dealership or can i go to any local parts shop for it?

^ You'd probably have to go to your local dealership. It's less than $1.

Here's the P/N:

91345-PAA-A01 (should be orange) #13 in diagram

^ why did you spend $10 unnecessarily? I hope you bought other parts as well.. not all dealerships are the same and there are several helpful members on this board who work at dealerships. I usually call around between Honda & Acura to find the best price on parts and use the online price to get the marked up price lowered.

I didnt think about other members on the board being able to help me out but than again I cant even post a WTB yet in the black market for like another 9 days or so...so even than I dont have time to wait. I appreciate it though. I didnt have any other parts to order otherwise I would have.

That sucks.. if you have a Honda dealership the parts are usually interchangeable although the P/N is usually different. btw.. Welcome to the board. Sucks to be a newbie but we were all there.. There's a lot of valuable info and knowledgeable members here.

^ you could replace the PS fluid as well. I'll post up some pics of the job later that I did a while back or some caps from the service manual later this evening or tomorrow.. but the o-ring replacement alone should be golden.

ok so good news..i got the new ring and installed it yesterday...easy as hell for one...this morning i woke up and started the car and bam..the noise is GONE!

Moving on...

So i took off another peice to the power steering which I believe is the output (located right above the belt to the right) ...2 bolts and I found another ring that needs to be replaced. Its flat as hell and I bet this one only costs about a buck too...it seems to be leaking a little out of the top there but not alot. You got the part # for that one too? Or the official name?

Also...I originally ordered the ring (ps inlet ring) from Acura and it came in Orange like you said it should...i went to my local honda dealership and ordered the same ring and they gave me a black one with a diff part #. The inside dimensions of the rings were the same...but the black honda ring was slightly bigger than the orange when you put them up one on top of the other you could see the difference...needless to say I sent acura dealership in okc the black one honda gave me and kept the orange one...Hopefully they still give me a refund and dont notice my clever ways. Just curious if that black ring would work just the same or maybe even give me a "tighter seal"?

^ lol.. that's hilarious. Sorry, I was going to post up some pics after my last post but I was unexpectedly banned and then forgot about posting. Glad you got it resolved. You can reseal the whole P/S pump.. shouldn't cost you more than $15 in parts. I resealed portions of my PS pump on my MDX. Can you point out what part you're talking about below..

OK so my 05 has noisy ps sound. I came upon this thread and figured i would walk out and see if there was any bubbles when I started the car and there was none! Should I start to get concerned that I may need a new pump or could it still be this o ring fix?

dont just go and buy a new pump.....if you have the noise try the cheap options first (o-ring/seals)

I dont see what im talkin about in this diagram. Its really simple...the peice i removed to change the inlet o ring has one bolt...the one im talkin about now sits about 1 or 2 inches up higher and has 2 bolts you have to remove to take it out and see the seal...i think its the output o ring...but not sure.

Ok so I stopped by the Acura dealership and they were good enough to pull the hose and determine that i did indeed have the old style O-Ring even though the Recall for the PS hose had allready be done .We shall see if this has taken care of the problem but at initial start up after o-ring was replaced I still here the PS pump we shall see!!!

I had something making noise under the hood and I figured it was the power steering pump. I had my recall done recently and now that I read this thread, noticed that my pump is quieter too. It wasn't too loud to begin with but is totally quiet now.

Sorry catfish...i just had that number but ended up returning the oring i bought from honda to the acura dealership and ended up using the orange ring i recieved from acura instead......If i were you i wouldnt order the honda ring becuase it was different...Id honestly order the acura one which is orange. the inner dimensions of the ring were the same but the honda one was slightly larger than the orange one overall...it MIGHT make a tighter fit but still, id suggest the orange one.

Can we sticky this thread?

^ They won't sticky because there are a 100 similar PS whine threads... and there'll be more after this one.. If you stay on the board long enough you see every issue come around at least twice. Next will be CV creaking sounds in the winter.. lol.

My dealer here just replaced the o-ring on my 04 TL and they said it was "squished" when the original recall work was done at least two years ago. I brought in the TSB so they knew what I knew and explained the symptoms and it took them about 20 minutes.

Wink Power Steerring Buzz on cold days.

This forum ROCKS!!!.
You guys have already saved me a bundle.
I love my 2004 TL and as long as I can get the parts to keep it going I will.

The O-ring, $0.63 at the dealer and 15 minutes to change. Small Craftsman Ignition type 10 mm wrench after breaking torque with longer wrench, did the job.

Keep on rolling.
