Peeling Paint on Front Bumper...

I have a 2004 Anthracite Metallic TL. The car has NEVER been in any accident. I live in Wisconsin, and after last winter I noticed that there is peeling paint on my front bumper. It is on both sides of the bumper, right below the second set of black plastic.

Has anyone else had this problem? I read some old threads and it seems this could be part of the "Acura paint problem". If so, will I be able to get this fixed for free from Acura??

I've attached two pics; sorry for the poor iphone quality. Thanks for any feedback!

Take some up close macro shots of the peeling paint.

Try to use a good quality camera that can focus in on the peeling area, and what's under the peeling paint.

I just had the same type of thing happen with my Type S. But mine was the clearcoat that had come off the front bumper. I had it taken care of-the guy took the finish down to the plastic. He then applied a primer coat, 2-3 layers of paint and the 2 layers of clearcoat.

That looks like the clear coat is separating. Our cars are known to have some cheap as clear coat. I have minute dots around the car. .but I think mine is kept to a very minimum because I'm anal about waxing my car which protects against the elements.

Your bumper was re-painted at some point, that's for sure. Paint/color is peeling up, and there is more color underneath. You can even see that the top layer is a different color, more violet/purple than the layer that is under the peeling.

It's probably a partial panel spot repair that wasn't prepped well.

i had a splotch of paint (2k4 TL .. quarter sized) just come off one day with a power washer about 1 year after owning my car .. no other defects in the paint or clear coat (this splotch came off the front bumper under the headlight and when down to the plastic bumper)

I touched it up with paint -- looked like crap in that area ever since

Dealer told me it was the clear coat coming off. I'm the 2nd owner. It appears the 1st owner had some minor front bumper work done, but the work was obviously sub-par. Thankfully no rust since it's on the plastic and not metal. And of course the dealer won't fix it.

bummer to hear of the sub-par paint job. we've had a paint issue on our back bumper near the driver side rear fender. it was starting to crack and peel revealing the underlying plastic bumper. it was taken care of under factory warranty. still in disbelief on how our 2006 TL had a quick deterioration of factory paint?

I had the same problem on my '05. Acura replaced the bumper and repainted it under warranty.

I have a 2008 TL carbon bronze color with paint starting to flake on top side front left bumper about size of a dime. Brought it to a professional autobody place and they said it definitely did not look like a rock chip. Acura took care of it but had issues. When I picked up the car there were a couple very small areas on the hood about 8 inches from the area they repaired. Those were not there before I brought the car in and they claimed no responsibility. I bought the car new and it has never been in an accident. Now i have a $35K car with a paint integrity issue. I typically keep my cars a long time. Probably won't buy another car from the Honda line. Other than this I have loved this car! I'm still thinking about reporting it to the better business bureau.
