P to D - Hesitation, Jerk, then Normal.

Hey guys,

Just noticed a recent problem with my TL.

When I move from P to D, then slowly remove my brake, my car rolls slightly, then after like a second, it jerks, then the gear fully engages which makes my car roll slightly faster. Then at this time I obviously press on the gas and go lol

Just wondering, is this slight "hesitation" then jerk (which means the gear is fully engaged?) normal?

Going from P to R doesn't jerk or hesitate or anything; very smooth.
Going from R to D does the exact same hesitation, then jerk though.

Any thoughts guys?

Thanks!

I think that's just the way it is. Same thing happens to my sister's Civic moving from R to D it needs some rolling for the gears to "catch".

Not very technical but YMMV.

Mine does the same thing. I think it's normal. I normally hold the brake until I feel the slight jerk then accelerate.

It is amazing to me how noisy these autos are when engaging into drive in the morning. I had the Accord V6 auto before this TL-S auto and they both have the same noisy engagement in the mornings no matter how long I warmed up the car. I live on a hill, so now I start up the car in the morning and put it into neutral and let the car warm up for a 1/2 mile before I come to a stop sign and then engage the car into drive. It is still a noisy engagement but at least it is not around sleeping neighbors. Not the sound and feel of "quality".

It's as if the hundreds of hours I've spent writing on the 5at are completely for nothing. It's the 3rd gear pressure switch causing this. It's supposed to shift into 3rd before hitting 1st to reduce the shock felt by the driver. If it went straight to first it would throw your head back a little more. When the 3rd gear switch gets out of calibration, it takes longer to downshift from 3rd to first. Normally it's quick enough that you don't notice it but this is a good indication it's switch time. If it's bad enough to cause this problem, you're wearing the clutches excessively every time it shifts gears. Replace both switches and you won't have this bump anymore. Shifts will be much better and downshifts will be much softer. Cold shifts will also be smoother.

Shifting it into neutral will not warm it up as quickly. In drive, even going down a hill, you're putting more heat in the trans via the torque converter. It doesn't matter if it's acceleration or engine braking, it's the same thing as far as heat production is concerned.

Mine makes no noise when engaging in the mornings no matter how cold. This is not normal.

@IHC, i have done the switches but I, indeed do feel these clunks and noise. I did do a 3x3 with Redline Racing as well. So what can be the issue? Do another drain&fill or change out the switches another time? It has been a good 5000 miles since I changed out the 3&4 switches. Thanks

Same here, all of the engagement noises and feelings were the same before and after the 3x3 and shift pressure switches when first engaging the auto into drive in the mornings.

I have no idea what the noises are, never had them. Mounts come to mind first.

Clean out the "screens" under the solenoid packs. They are likely full of junk. While you are at it, change the transmission filter if you have 04-06 to keep even more crap out of the system.

Even after switches, fluid and filter (helped tremendously), my trans was a bit sloppy sometimes. After I cleaned out the solenoid screens/filters it is even more solid - they had some debris in them similar to what is on the magnetic plug.

OP do you engage your parking brake....?

I had the same problem before but it got resolved by using the parking brake....this is how i do it:

From D-P....
Press brake
Shift from D-N
Engage Hand brake
Remove foot from brake and make sure the car is held steady by the parking brake
Press the pedal brake
Shift from N-P

Using this method when you park you are making the car sit on your parking brake rather than the tranny....

From P-D...
Press pedal brake
Shift from P-D or P-R depending how you park
Release hand brake
Release pedal brake
Start driving...

Try this out and let me know what you think.....

Since new, my '04 has always gone into D in 2 steps from N. I will sometimes put it in neutral at a long red light, then shift to D on green. There is an immediate sense of going in gear, then about a one second delay, a harder engagement with the car starting to move with no brake. I always wait until the second "bump" before giving it gas. I always guessed that it was going from 2nd to 1st. That's what it felt like. I have considered it "normal" for almost 8 years and have had no tranny problems. I have done 2 3X drain and fills with Honda ATF inside of 22k miles. I haven't done anything with the switches following the policy of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

It's definitely not a "problem" that will make the trans fail. I also just figured it was going into 2nd then to 1st which is fairly common to make it more comfortable for the driver. I found out later that it was 3rd and then 1st. Mine also has done it since brand new but it definitely gets worse as the switches age. Right now, I have to really pay attention to notice. No one else can feel it.

I do encourage you to do the switches. They get out of calibration over time and it's hard to realize how bad you need them since it's so gradual but after you replace them you will be happy. They seem to be much more time oriented than mileage.

Perhaps that's because they are. Quit your whining. Nobody cares to listen to you moan about how you are the savior to the forum and how your hard work goes unnoticed every time someone asks a question you've already covered. You seem to have a knowledge base. So why not just lead with what you know. Instead of alway having to complain about someone not checking the search database first. PM me. I'm sure we can work this it out in private. I travel a lot too. Maybe we can meet at the Marriott for a Jack and Coke and hammer this thing out.

Dece: You're new here so I will cut you some slack. We try to be more respectful and less antagonistic with other members. You're not showing the best judgment by jumping in and trying to kick-ass on people that have been around much longer than you, have a wealth of experience, and did nothing to provoke a personal attack. Debate. Disagree. But do it with mutual respect.

IHC: You did show good judgement in taking it to PM to work something out. I like that.

Actually, there are 3 posts from XPditor (me). The first was entirely topical. The second and third were required housekeeping. That's what mods do. But, I get the humor.

I feel that engage-ish,, then lock into gear in D.

It doesn't bother me unless when I do J turns
(just gotta shift from R to D a little too early)
