oil pump housing leak swap engine?
oil pump housing leak swap engine?
Hello this is my first time posting on acura world....as im having a problem that i really don't know what to do and would really appreciate your help.
So basically i purchased an 06 acura tl with 312k on it i absolutely love this car but sadly it has been giving so much problems from day 1. I purchased this on feb 2018 and it had a oil pan gasket leak which i repaired. I also fixed some other minor stuff but my main problem now is that it is leaking oil. The mechanic told me that the oil pump housing is leaking and he can reseal it but its a temporary fix. He even offered to do an engine swap with 200k on it the price for the engine reseal is $1100 with new timing belt water pump, the engine swap would be $1500 but i don't think it would have a timing belt replaced or any of that....i spent so much money on this car already so i don't want to get rid of it i actually want to keep it for a long time. Maybe 3 - 4 years...also i should mention it has had 11 owners in the past i know i know which is pretty bad....it was my mistake not to look at the vehicle history before purchasing but i can't do any thing about it now....but my option now is reseal or engine swap? which would be the better way to go?

Never heard that one before when talking about timing belts
Honestly, if your planning on keeping the car & have no information on its past then you might as well get the timing belt done & just replace the oil pump ($160) while he's in there.

they said the oil pump doesn't need to be replaced just the seal...im not sure as i don't know much about this since i never had this problem before...
Not sure where your Tech is coming from " there looks to be 50 percent left on the timing belt ". There is no way, that I know of, to determine that! If the current engine runs well, has good compression, and no valve issues, I would replace the oil pump seal, It is a known issue, with these engines. While the oil pump seal is being dealt with, since your in that area anyway, replace the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, cam seals, in other words, replace all the easy to get to parts, while your working in that area, anyway. Also, ask your Tech., to inspect the motor mounts. If, as you say, you want the car to last 3-4 years, the items I mentioned, would be a wise investment. Also, no need to replace a 300K engine, with a 200K engine. If the rings and valves in your current enging are OK, I would recommend sticking with it.

I dont get what he's saying is a temp fix with oil pump seal. Temporary as in another 200k miles? Sounds like Teh is suggestion what you noted as Option 1 the reseal that sounds like right option along with Franks suggestion too.
08KBP_VA is correct. To my knowledge, Unless the oil pump housing is cracked, or broken, in some way, it really doesn't fail. I would question op's Tech, re: "temp fix". I don't know of any way, to perform a temporary fix, on a faulty oil pump seal!, EXTERNALLY.
Is the same mechanic the one who has been recommending all of this stuff? Also it sounds like this car has been a pony for a bunch of "buy here pay here" type dealers. I hope you haven't gotten a TL from them and are paying a lot every month.
IMO, it's going to be a few hours of labor if it is the oil pump leaking but it's a through repair that should last a long time. It's pretty much the same as the timing belt procedure, but with the oil pump and pan added. Also it could be leaking from the rear main seal or front main seal. Also how is the trans?
If trans is good, spend the money with a REPUTABLE mechanic and get it all fixed. The labor only needs to be done once and it sounds like earlier attempts may have been band-aids to cover up problems.
If trans is starting to slip or show signs of wear, I'd jump into a different car.
