Oil Leak! Need help

Alright guys, I've had an oil leak in my car for a couple years now, and I have absolutely no idea what it could be. I've had my oil pan fixed TWICE (I'm not even lowered) and I've also changed my pcv valve. I still have a bad oil leak. I went under my car today to find this. There's also multiple oil spots in my garage that are pretty big. Anybody know what else I can check?

looks like rear main seal. Is the leak in between the block and the transmission housing?

900 bucks!? I'm pissed that I've spent the money to fix things that aren't even the problem. The shop has never once brought up the rear main seal, but i bet you that's what it is. You're right flyromeo its in between the block and transmission housing

Do you remember if the leak starting not long after having the PS recall done?

If it is indeed a rear main seal leak and it's been ongoing for 2 years now, you're going to have to get it replaced if you want the leak stopped. Sometimes rear main seal leaks stop as suddenly as they started, but that doesn't appear to be the case here.

On the other hand, you can add a lot of oil before even reaching 1/10 the cost of having it replaced. Do you have to add oil between oil changes? It's hard to tell for sure from pictures, but I'm not sure I'd wait much longer to get it replaced.

Have you tried taking it to a car wash and completely clean the areas with a degreaser and then do a follow up check?

And yes, it's a $9 part and the labor should be ~$900. If they try to charge you more than that, go somewhere else.

Nfnsquared I appreciate all of that information. I change my oil every 3000 miles and I do not have to add oil in between changes, that is why I'm going to wait on getting anything major done. I figured since I don't need to add oil between changes that it was nothing urgent that needed to be fixed right away, however it's still annoying having a huge oil spot in my garage. Once I start having to fill up between changes I'm going to look into changing my rear main seal. Thanks for your help

it happened once in my Accord, I park out side it was snow on the ground prior the car park. I came out the next morning found a huge engine oil spot. The leak spot exactly as you described. My mechanic charged $600 for the whole thing. Dealer quoted at $1050 after tax.

The Acura dealership where I'm from charges the most ridiculous prices. I never get any work done there, it's honestly just not worth it. 600 bucks is a lot better than 900, maybe I'll get lucky

I have the same leak. I "fixed" it by swapping to basic dino conventional oil instead of the synthetic blend. Once it got gummed up a bit, it stopped the leak. Now I just have to use dino oil forever.

There's also a theory that a plugged PCV valve could be causing a pressure leak.... IIRC, the part is ~$25 and takes literally 3 minutes to replace.

Wouldn't hurt to try this ^

You could also try using some oil leak stop product. I used the Lucas brand oil leak stop on my POS grand cherokee which had oil leaks from multiple locations and it actually worked very well. In fact, I can leave it parked on my driveway now for several days and it only leaves a tiny spot or two. Remember, there are no guarantee's but for like 10 bucks, its worth a try. If it doesn't work, oh well and it will be removed when you change your oil next.

It also doesn't work over night so you would have to give it a couple weeks to see if it stopped it or not.

Good luck

I am experiencing it looks like the same oil leak and I thought it is power steering fluid and here is why. The oil pan and portion of the subframe right next to the oil pan were wet- oil wet- traced it to the power steering pump. The pump was wet and oil was under the pump. I changed it- got one from Autozone- didn't have time to do the overhaul. I was hopping after I change the PS pump- there will be no oil leak. Well- the PS pump is dry now and around the pump is dry, but the oil pan and the subframe next to the oil pan are wet again. I also noticed the AT splash guard is also oil wet. Now, 2-3 yrs ago I had to change the oil pan because the threads got stripped. But this oil leak now started a few months ago. I don't think it's the oil pan because I didn't seal it properly.
Maybe I should try the pcv valve first and see what happens?
