New Timing belt due to TSB
New Timing belt due to TSB
Not sure if this has been brought up, but for "new" Gen 3 TLr's... Keep an ear out for "chirping" noise at idle. My 2006 had under 30K on it when I brought it to the dealer for some minor work. While there I told the svc guy that I had a chirping sound, like crickets or something while at idle. Turns out there was a TSB for a faulty bearing I believe in the idler pully or balance shaft. I ended up with a free timing belt replacement so I'm good to 150K

"Client states that there is a chirping noise from under the hood"
"Cause: Idler Pulley surface can rub tbelt. 1110A3 without water pump: install a taper shim kit and grind a relief on the engine mount bracket if needed. s/b # 14 WP93"
like I said, as soon as I described this noise to the service guy, he knew right away what it was.
Good luck!
Per my dealer's invoice:

ACURA Some Acuras have a chirp coming from the timing belt. In T.S.B. 08-031 issued on April 10, Acura noted that the sound, coming from 2009 MDX and TL models, is caused by a misaligned idler pulley, so that the timing belt rubs against the side of the pulley. A shim, a new timing belt and a pulley should straighten things out. An earlier bulletin from October outlined this problem in 2005-8 MDX
and TLs.

You're not the first person to completly miss that - although I don't know how it's possible - hence the

.Those instructions are the only way to access TSB's via links on this site. There are no other alternatives via AcuraZine.
Perhaps the network locked you out. Or you're not allowed/allowing the "cookie". Or you didn't "submit" your car info (last step in the instructions).
You can try Googling a cached page, but it's hit and miss.
am not sure.. but i work for one of the largest software companies in the world and they take their web security quite seriously lol.
in any case.. this chirping noise was driving me nuts and i got quite frustrated that 2 dealerships could not hear it while it was in service with them.. .. now that i am armed with this TSB it will FINALLY get addressed!
Thanks Azine!!!

I a pretty sure i have this chirping as well, I thought one of the drive belts just may have been old or something. Do you know if there was a tsb number for the canadian side ? Our bulletins are not the same as the US ones. When you bring yours in Acura604 if they tell you that would be appreciated. Thanks.

i called Sharon at Northshore Acura service. they cross
referenced the US TSB and acknowledged that CDN cars
are affected. feel free to call her.

Thanks for the info. I'm in my Civic today, but I'll be sure to fire up my 3G when I get home.
Not sure why some dealers would want to resist doing TSB work. My thought is that they should be happy to do the work as they'd get reimbursed from Acura? ...Or am I missing/misunderstanding something?

Well, first there are 2 or 3 TSB's for "chirping" in that general area. For the TSB to apply, your VIN needs to be in the VIN range AND you have to have the symptoms listed.
Then you need to be in warranty.
If you're out of warranty you still have a chance via "good will", but that has to be approved by Acura above the dealership level.
IOW - the dealer might be happy to do it, but if you're not in the VIN range or out of warranty, they won't get paid without "good will" permission in advance.
So for those of you that had this done by the dealer under warranty due tot he TSB; did the dealer need to "hear it" themselves.
Most dealerships I've dealt with never take my word and will only pop the hood IF they hear something themselves.

I was at the dealer already for another routine maint. thing. I had a concern with the noise, did some research on it and walked in prepared to battle it out. I told thie guy what the noise was, he walked out and turned the key, 10 seconds later he said, "let me make an appointment for you to have this fixed".

My mirrors which are on a tsb were covered by my extended warranty. My car is due for service soon, so i will be asking them about this when i am in there.

Did you have this noise after you start up the car during warmups or was this all the time even after the car is at an operating temps? Mine does sound kind like that and more when under load and with a/c on and this is only when engine is cold until it warms up and driven couple of miles the noise goes away

Tilted Pulley Covered under warranty???
Any Canadians had success getting this issue covered under warranty? I've had the problem diagnosed by my dealership as a tilted pulley, with the solution being the shim installation etc. The 06 TL is still under extended warranty and I'm getting push back from the dealership and Acura Canada on the issue being a warrantable item. The service bulletin clearly indicates to me that this is caused by a mechanical problem, yet the story I get is that this is a "wear material" item. I also get the story that the service bulletins don't apply in Canada!!!
Would appreciate hearing about other's experience with getting this covered under warranty. Car only has ~ 60 k on it (37000 miles)
Thanks for sharing any experience you've had

I wouldn't think it would matter. If you are still under warranty new car or extended, it should be covered. The only "out" I can think of for the dealer would be a normal wear and tear item. Hard to belive this falls under that category.
Here is a link where I uploaded the TSB for those struggling.

Problem was finally resolved by Acura but I had to go to the top of the foodchain in Acura Canada to get any action. It's hard to believe that this matter was one that required me to take those steps. That being said they came through in the end. Moral of the story - don't give up when you have a reasonable case!!!
Did anyone get this covered outside of the normal 4yr 50K warranty? My local dealer says it's not covered under the power train warranty, which is all my vehicle currently has.
It's been doing it off and on since I got it months ago. I took it into the dealer and they couldn't hear it. It was making the noise when I took it into the dealer, and oddly enough, it didn't make it since. They had the car 20 minutes, so I don't think they actually did anything besides test drive it and probably beat on it since my MPG average went way down.
