New gauge cluster not showing miles?

I have an 05 tl. I bought an 04 gauge cluster on ebay because I wanted to mod my stock cluster and didnt want the down time. I put it in tonight thinking it would at least show the odo from the original car since i was under the impression miles are stored in the cluster. It shows a bunch of hash marks for the odo. Neither of the trip odo will calculate miles either. The only thing that works is avg mpgs and time driven and of course temps ect. but nothing mileage related. Is the cluster busted or is this normal with a cluster from another vehicle?

Maybe it's sync'ed with the ECU of the original car?

That is exactly what I was thinking. But i could have sworn ppl on this forums popped in new gauges and had new odo reading. Just trying to figure out of if I should return it for being faulty or if this is normal. Dont want issues when I go to sell the cluster.

The Speedometer Cluster is NOT synced to the ECU. The Speedometer itself stores the mileage information. Sounds like a faulty cluster since it's not showing the mileage information.

The reason for the dashes, is that the odometer function is currently locked. This happens when someone transfers mileage from one cluster to a new one with the Honda HDS or similar device. After reading the mileage on the old cluster, it "locks" the old one.

Whoever owned the cluster previously must've had the mileage transferred to a new cluster.

There is an easy fix, find someone with an HDS and have them go into the cluster setup and "release" the mileage.

I've done this several times, I assure you, this is the issue.
