New '05 TL Owner - Steering Wheel Click

Hi Acurazine, I just picked up a '05 Acura TL and am absolutely loving it. However, as with any 10 year old car there are minor issues (mostly electronic). All the issues appear to be common from browsing through Acurazine, [Center speaker static, Bluetooth module not working, clicking steering wheel]

Of the 3 issues I was able to find known fixes except for the latter.

The steering wheel makes audible clicking noises when turning in the direction which the turn signal is active. In other words, when the left turn signal is initiated the steering wheel will click when making a left turn.

I saw that there were threads regarding this issue but none of them seem to pin-point a definitive solution. I've researched the issue for a couple of hours to no avail. I'm hoping that someone who has experienced the issue can shed some light.

Thanks in advance!!

I forgot to mention that the clicking sound is definitely from the steering wheel and that it only happens with the turn signal initiated. No sounds whatsoever if turn signal isn't used.

Inspect the turn signal switch/arm both physically and ideally electrically.

Hey Polo,

I'll try and attempt this tonight. Did you also experience the clicking issue?
Would the airbag & steering wheel need to be removed to replace the turn signal switch?

I did not experience the clicking issue, only trying to help you troubleshoot. Most of the time that switch is the culprit when either the arm doesn't return to neutral position or keeps clicking. It's easy to see once disassembled how it works and how the steering wheel makes it "click back" into position. It has little plastic parts which can wear down or stick out weirdly after being forced or after some time.

You don't need to remove the air bag and steering wheel, simply the lower dashboard cover and steering column cover. Here's the scans from the manual if it helps. Be cautious nonetheless as the airbag is located in that area, ideally disconnect the battery and have the radio code ready.

Only for screws location for cover, ignore the steps.

Sounds exactly like my 05. Completely normal and like just about any other car I've owned. When the signal is active and you turn the wheel you hear clicks as the "teeth" (very lose term) move past the indictor innards. As you turn the direction of the signal they pass/ratchet by with a click when you turn opposite they catch and click a bit louder as the signal stalk returns to the off/middle. Enjoy your new ride.

I see. I wouldn't consider it loud, but then again, you don't get same sound perception in a youtube video than you would if I sat next to you.

I had this issue develop in my TL also. It was silent before but now it clicks as described. It is definitely not normal & appears due to wear on the switch mechanism.

Thanks for the repair procedure scans guys.
