Need to let rpms drop 500 for smooth shift?
Hello all, I am from Louisville, Ky and am new to Acurazine, and the owner of a NBP 2005 Acura TL 6 speed. It is my first manual car (unfortunately for the clutch) but it may just be my imagination but I find that when I shift (especially in the early gears i.e. first to second and second to third) I have to let the rpms drop by about 500 to get my shifts smooth or else if I just throw it in right away it will violently "jerk" into gear. Does your car act the same or do you think something is wrong with my car? Is it possible their is a I also have had my friends whom have driven manuals their whole life drive it and say its tough to get smooth. If anyone could help that would be great thanks.
well in your case, it's because that's the way the car is designed. You have to let the rpms drop lower for the next higher gear.
I.e.: you cannot shift from 1st to 5th and expect the RPMs to remain the same, you need to let it drop to the appropriate RPM in 5th gear.
a less extreme example:
you cannot shift from 1st to 2nd and have the RPMs remain constant. You need to let the rpms drop a little for 2nd gear. It's the nature of a manual transmission and nothing wrong with the car. Every higher gear will "start" at a lower RPM than the gear under it. Watch some youtube vids and see how it works. It's hard to explain over text. It has to do with the gear ratios in the transmission. Ill timed shifts should get less noticeable in the higher gears.
on another note, this MT is tricky to get smooth. There are other mods you can do to help with that like the slave valve delete, but seeing that you seem pretty new to cars in general i'd avoid doing something like that until you're more familiar with the car. Just takes more practice. Try releasing the clutch gradually in the lower gears.
I've found that if i count to 2 in my head I can get pretty smooth shifts without having to worry too much about modulating the clutch for smoothness, but only on moderate to fast acceleration. Slow shifting at low speed is a little more tricky.
lol if you're a teen or early 20s, a "whole life" of driving manuals isn't too long..
