Clunk sound on right wheel when going over bumps

Whats up everyone.

Every time I drive over street bumps I hear a clunck sound on my right front tire. I feel as if the tire is not absorbing the bumps. I think maybe I need new shocks, but wanted you guys to chime in, in case its something else.

Apparently no one has a clue... I have the same noise. I was told it was a bad shock, but I don't completely buy it, as I hear the same noise occasionally when I start the car on an incline/slope. While driving it seems to come from the right front corner, when starting it seems to come from the center tunnel forward of the shifter.

Swaybar endlinks or even Compliance bushings. Also don't forget your engine mounts. Those are the common culprits.

Sounds similar to what I have, although I only hear the sound when i go over bumps, not when the car is on idle or running on a smooth surface.

What exactly was the problem you had? I cant see how motor mounts will make that sound only on the right wheel everytime I go over a bump.

when going over bumps it could be swaybar links, swaybar bushings, strut mount or even the strut itself. if it was a mototmount, you would be able to see the motor moving around when in drive at a stop and brake-torque the engine a little. most likely a swaybar related issue. check your control arm bushings too. unlike, but they move with the suspension. check your lugnuts. could be as simple as loose nuts. another unlikey but possible source is your wheel bearing. not common, but i guess it could go bad.

Sounds like the problem I had. The mechanic at the garage said it was caused by the Swaybar links and I had them replaced, but it made no difference. I bought the Swaybar bushings on line and replaced them my self. They cost about $5 each and take 15min to replace. Might be worth a try.

Damn, sounds like it could be anything I really dont want to take the car to a shop if its a minor thing. Plus I got rear-ended and I'm getting my car fixed, trying to get that fixed on the other parties expense.

I think it is your motor mounts. I get the same noise everytime i go over speed bumps, it actually sounded like my spare tire was jumping around. The sound was deceptive, sounded like it was coming from back but it was only when right front tire went over speed bump. I need to replace engine mount but since you have to replace all 3 if you are gonna do it, i need to wait to get the cash.

Look at the motor mounts first... Get somebody you trust, open hood, put car in drive, pull the ebrake and press brakes as well and have them give it blips on the gas. See if the motor wants to jump at you. Small blips. Have them test your brakes first b4 you get ran over jr LMAO. If the motor has alot more play, its motor mounts. Mine was completely broken but you couldn't tell by just looking at it.

Aha, how about you stand beside the car just to be safe. And I think you're talking about innovative mounts. My passenger side mount is bad as well and it makes that clunking noise. At first I thought it was sway bar related but it wasn't.

My dealership just wants to replace front and side. They do not want to do the rear cuz they don't think its needed. I told them that all 3 should be done at the same time cuz another mechanic of mine told me that all of them are gone. Trying to argue my way with them.

I'm getting a similar sound in mine in the front right corner. Mine happens when I put the car in reverse or drive and hit the gas slightly. It's like a metal to metal clunking or clinking sound. Are my motor mounts suspect also?

Sometimes I noticed a little noise on the front right too, but I thought it may be air pockets in the heater core that are getting circulated around. And come to think of it, I do have a very slight smell of radiator fluid after I park in my garage. But its very little and I don't hear or see anything leaking.. So I don't have a clue what the noise is. But it does not sound like metal clinking or clanking or clunking.. =) It sounds quieter and more subtile. more insulated.

How do you check the mounts on a 6-speed? E-brake while feathering gas/clutch??

Quick question for those who have or had bad motor mounts. How long have you driven or are driven with the bad motor mounts? I've been driving mine for two months. I think I'm pushing it..

While the car is still, if you bounce the car on the the right front, like over and over, can you hear it make any noise? If so, I doubt it is motor mounts.

Any updates for anyone... I haven't got the problem diagnosed yet. But recently on cold starts, the engine is rumbling more, and when it warms up it stops. Still getting the clunk sound when going over bumps. Are these def indications of bad mounts? I really dont want to keep driving around to long like this, its been like two months already. Has anyone driven post two months with bad mounts?

I dont know how long I have been driving with mine, but I have 74K miles on mine. If you have an auto have someone get in the drivers seat push down on the brake (all the way down) and tap the gas to see how much the mounts flex. There is one mount that you can see easily on the passenger side and one in the center of the engine, just behind the radiator. The others I read are harder to see, but people have suggested replacing them all.

got a free multi inspection from Acura, they claim that i have the left and front motor mounts and the rear and front trans mount done. They are charging $700 for engine and $500 for trans.. Ive decided to buy the innovative mounts for $300 because the dealer is obviously a rip off.

I guess thats their way of making money. I have an 05 with 60k .. From my understanding the innovative mounts have a lifetime warranty.

So will this fix your clunking sounds?

How hard is it to change motor mounts? Lift the engine with a jack, remove and replace? no? 700 sounds about double what it should cost. Just in my own estimation. I mean, timing belt r&r is internal engine and cramped spaces to work.. So it seems motor mounts would be easier access, and all external engine work..and cheaper. But oh well.. what ya gunna do right?

While almost everyone here seems to be suffering from MotorMount-itis, anyone think that it might be the lower ball joint, which is an integrated part of the knuckle, which BTW is a much more expensive repair than a motor mount?

Changing the mounts will stop the engine from bouncing around and will reduce engine vibrations. Its an easy DIY if you know about cars, I however will have a friend of mine help me install.

If I were you, I'd try to make sure it really is the motor mount that's causing the problem before you go spend all that money and then realize it's something else.

btw, I would be careful about buying harder or more firm motor mounts. Because if those motor mounts are more ridged, then it might transfer more noise and vibrations to the frame.. so you will feel and hear it.

For me, I think it's the side mount.... the rubber topcap part is split apart and there's obvious signs of contact between top of mount & attachment bracket.
