Need help diagnosing problem..

8 am - tried to start car. wouldn't turn over and start, only click click click but lights and radio worked. thought battery was low on power so 30 min later got a friend to try to jump me, didn't work.

Had to catch a ride to take care of some things.

2 pm - get back home. thinking of calling AAA but first just give it another shot to see if we can jump it. this time i am able to start it without a jump! i just turn the key and it starts. wtf?

With my friend's tools we test the battery, it is fine. We test the alternator, it is charging the battery when the car is on so it is fine.

Looked at some relays in the fusebox, everything looked normal.

Any ideas? Starter? Loose wire somewhere?

sounds like the starter! good thing is they arent to expensive, only 150 or so amd easy to diy

alls you have to do is remove battery and tray, and the starter is right there.

This assumes that all relays and wiring checks out

1. lightly tap starter with hammer and see if car starts, if it does, rebuild or replace starter. If not, see below:

2. remove battery and load test it, if it passes move on, if not, replace it.

3. remove starter and test it

Last time this happened was 3 weeks ago on 7/11 and since then it never occurred again, until today.

Sometime in the evening I wanted to leave and it wouldn't start, same exact symptoms as before. Waited about 5 minutes, tried again, and it started. Since then I've driven and parked and then started it back up with no problem.

I'm also putting my $ on the starter. Maybe these are symptoms that although the starter is not dead, it is failing and needs to be replaced sometime soon?

Same thing happened this morning on the way to work. Wouldn't start after trying for about 30 min. Called AAA and 5 min later it started. Took it directly to the dealership to have it checked out/fixed.

We shall see what the prognosis is...
