If none of the above, do the following:
1. Check and replace engine air-filter - you can do this yourself if you can operate a screw driver
2. Check and replace transmission fluid, it should be pink or red, brown= bad
3. Seafoam the TL, it will help a lot, there is a thread here on how to do it, search for seafoaming the TL, this will clean the fuel injectors, the carbon build-up inside the motor, and any sludge/gunk in the motor.

If you only drive it short distances in town the gas mileage will be poor.
If it gets 30+ on the freeway with cruise control on there is nothing else you can do to get it better except adjust your driving style.

go to the 3G garage near the top of the forum, in there search for air filter using CTRL + F keys. there is a DIY on how to take it off.

this is a pretty old thread but here i go...
14mpg sounds ridiculous for a 3gTL, even for pure city driving. Unless you're flooring the car everytime you take off, you should be getting around 19-20mpg average, but i don't think you're flooring it, right? =D
I have an 08 TL type s and i'm getting 23 ciry 29 hwy, i noticed my mileage go down during the winter time because my tires wern't properly inflated. Try going with 33psi rear 36 psi front when tires are cold, see if that helps a little.

14 mpg = u got a very heavy foot or a fuel leak...... any puddles or gas smell?
I got an older 02 CLS and my city mpg is at least 21 and most of the time it is 23. I get about 25-26 mixed and 32 highway... I never go above 2.5K on shifting unless I am trying to merge and even then 4K is more than enough....

I have an 06 TL. I get similar numbers as you, 15-16 in the city but on the freeways I get around 29-30. I rarely every have fast take-offs, but I think the short distances with stop and go traffic definitely do not help the mpg.
I have a 07 TL-S and I live in the bay area and I too have the same problem with my MPG in the city. I get around 14-15 in the City. I don't know why, but I have come to this conclusion:
1-the hilly terrain
2- I only drive about 8-10 miles in the morning and not enough time driving the car to bring up the mpg.
I went to the dealership and tried to get an explanation and they basically is telling me the same thing. Check the tire pressure and check the air filters. That's the only thing they can do. Since all of these cars are all computer controlled, there's nothing they can do to improve the MPG.
Fellow Ziners, if anyone has other advice and suggestion, please help us out.

Where do you live? In winter, you can expect your mileage to drop because of two things. 1) Colder air is more dense which means more oxygen per cubic foot. The ECU will compensate for this in an effort to maintain the optimum fuel/air ratio by increasing the fuel shot from the injectors and advancing the timing to take advantage of this. 2) Winter fuels are frequently oxygenated in an attempt to reduce pollutants in the colder months. This comes with a cost in mileage.
Have your driving habits changed (I would tend to doubt this). Along with the drop in mileage, do you notice any other negative affects such as lack of power, hesitation at startoff, missing, pinging, or any other things of the sort?
Mileage just doesn't drop suddenly for no reason. And a dirty air filter will cause a gradual reduction in performance. So do some careful checks and yes, if you tires are under pressure and your engine air filter is dirty, correct those cases as soon as you can.
increasing gas mileage in winter
When climate control is set to automatic, it runs the AC compressor, probably year round. By leaving climate control in auto but turning AC off in winter, I get approx 2 mpg more in average driving - increases from 22 to 24. Works OK except if raining, when AC needs to be on to help defog.

But, I have to tell you, since switching to Shell 93 Premium a few months ago, I have gotten the best gas mileage I have ever gotten in both my 08 and when I used to have my 06!
I am consistently getting a 25-26mpg avg with mostly 29-30mpg on open highway/interstate
Two trips to Pittsburgh last month I got 31-32 on open interstate/turnpike!!!!
booya!!!!!

the best and most accurate way to calculate mpg, which I do, is try and go to the same gas pump at the same gas station each time (typically I've been able to do this on 4-5 consecutive fill ups!) and take the trip odometer at fill up and divide by the amount of gallons on the pump it took to fill up the car! usually for gallons I go out and round to the nearest thousandths in order to get the most accurate mpg!
I suggest you do it by hand, its much more accurate! Once in a while I match by hand what the trip display info said by the computer but most often not!
It's in the MID, along with a bunch of other settings and options.
Check your owner's manual, or register on the Acura owner website to get access to the internet version of the owner's and navi manuals if you didn't get the softcover manuals in the leatherette case.
well yes, the trip computer underneath the speedometer tells you a whole bunch of trip information including mpg and other stuff but I have found it to typically be off by 2-3mpg

The one thing I have noticed about the MID is it usually reads higher early in my tank than later in the tank. I'll get 21 in town the first 20 miles and then it creeps down to 18-19 by the time I fill up. I do the math when I get a dozen receipts and the calculated mileage jives with the MID mileage I noted on the receipt- often within .5 MPG.
I have had a much better experience with the MID and have found the MID to be very accurate and usually a tad conservative in the MPG estimate. I have 3+ years of data now and the MID is always +/- 1mpg for me. I fill up the tank each time and the fuel remaining is about 3-5 gallons. I squeeze to the 2nd click on a gas pump as well if that makes a difference.

no matter what car you have, and most now a days have some sort of MID similar to the TLs, your still better off to calculate your mpg by hand because that really is the most accurate way to do it (also, trying to use the same pump at the same gas station makes the hand calculations even more accurate!)
just my
There's a thread out there where we posted everyone's average mph and mpg. It turns out the mpg follows the mph almost directly. Mine was averaging 13mpg but it turned out at my average of 19mph that was pretty normal.
Mine also will turn 34mpg on the freeway driving it easy so there's nothing wrong with the car.
The MIDs on these cars are generally very accurate. The computer knows exactly how much fuel is being consumed and exactly how many miles are being put on. I would trust the MID over the calculation unless you do several calculations to get an average. You have variables such as pump shutoff point that can alter your results with the calculation method. In other words, don't put a whole lot of weight on only one fillup, get an average of at least 5 fillups.

the MPG is calculated for the full trip....for instance....you were driving city and spirited for 400 miles....and got a mileage of 17.....
now ur driving highway cruising at 75....it will not bump upto 30ish....it will take its own sweet time....even if u cruise at 75mph getting 30 mpg for 400 miles....u final mpg will show something like 23 or 24 !!!
resetting a trip should help with the same !!!

^ I just entered a bunch of receipts today going back to October. I have to say the TL is amazingly consistent in MPG correlated to MPH. I enter my mileage at fueleconomy.gov so my browser has saved cache fdata or "MPH=xx;MID=yy" strings that I add as comments. I have 3 years of data so I see many cases where I have the exact same MID calculated values with similar actual MPG.
For my normal drive, average MPH=26 and MID MPG is 18 and actual is 18.4. At MPH=27 the MID says 19 and actual is 18.9. At a 30MPH , I get about 22 MID vs. 22.2 actual.
I have a bunch of entries with similar speeds and similar computed/actual MPGs like these figures. My overall fueleconomy.gov is currently 20 MPG. I have just over 29K miles in 3.5 years so the TL doesn't get on the highway much but will in a couple of weeks.
Regarding the Highway calculations, I have noticed similar tendencies as swoosh did. In my case I had a 1/2 tank consumed at my normal 19MPG average prior to going on a highway trip. Assuming a 30MPG highway figure or a 11 MPG improvement over my average, it will take 100+ miles to show MID calculated value of 25MPG. MPG is an AVERAGE and not an absolute in the MID so it will take that many miles to see a drastic change. The MID should bump up 1MPG every 15 or so miles in this scenario and it does for me.
It works similarly if you start a Highway trip and end with city driving in the MPG will slowly decrease.

..guess not
i'd say this is normal as well, i started a thread on this when i first bought my car. MPG was around 15-17 with a light foot.
It was all in the city, short trips.
I get over 35+mpg bursts with that same light foot on the highway though, so its all good. It's normal.
Now I'm getting about 24mpg on average, which is the same as the Toyota Matrix 130hp 1.6L engine that this car replaced.

nope we all can get 50 mpg

I dont really think the computer is accurate anyways... 1 question do you warm up your car for a few mins in the morning?

wow thats my thread
LOL !!!
well the computer is very accurate.....its AVERAGE MPG not ACTUAL MPG....
so well if you did 10 miles highway getting 30 mpg and then 10 miles city getting 20 mpg....after 20 miles the computer displays 25 mph average !!! so you might be getting 20 but your average is 25....
i calculate my mpg depending on how much gas went in and how many miles i went and damn that thing is very accurate (Standard Deviation of 1-2)
