Mirrors Wont Tilt
Mirrors Wont Tilt
I seem to be having an intermittent problem with the mirrors not tilting when I put the car into reverse. The previous owner complained of this according to the maintenance records I got from Acura.. and their remedy to this was "Relinked the mirror memory"
Anyone have an idea how to do this?

The mirrors have always been a issue with these cars. Pretty every TL I have owned with exception of my current one so far, has had issues with the mirrors tilting in reverse. Its not that they wont do it, but they are jittery and twitchy if that makes sense. Its like the motors go back and forth and have no idea where to put the mirror, then it just stops. I noticed it does this more during colder months. Some people here say its because something needs to be lubed in there and then reset, but I don't buy that. To me it seems to be a motor or electrical issue. Your not alone on this, its a common issue with the TL...atleast the 07 and 08's.
Yeah, mine works fine when I'm controlling it via the switch, but as soon as you hit reverse, it seems to hesitate and get stuck in a certain spot. The dealer told me it was a lubrication issue.
The only way I could see that being true is if the reverse switch actually sent less power to the mirror motor than the actual mirror switch. Seeing as thats highly unlikely, I really don't know what else the issue could be.
Mine's an 07 TL-s btw.

On my '04, when putting in Reverse, the mirrors would click all the time and sometimes it would randomly stop midway.
I took them apart and greased it with Shin-Etsu Grease. It has worked quiet and smooth with no issues since. When I had it apart, the grease from the factory was all in clumps.

On my 08 Type S, I had the same issue. Clicking like they couldn't get all the way down when I went into reverse or if my GF used her key and they tried to move to her setting. I replaced the servos and haven't had an issue with either mirror since then. You can replace the mirror also but they are pricey. $400 a piece.
and thats why I don't buy the lucubrating fix. Simply because the mirrors work perfectly in regular mode. If it was a lubricating issue you would think the problem would effect the mirror movement regardless of the method controlling the movement. Its simply a shitty design that goes bad even on well maintained and low mileage cars.
Well in those cases I guess it would be worth a shot. So how do you grease the thing? Do the mirrors pull right out? Then what and where gets greased? Even though my current Type S doesn't have the issue, it's just a matter of time before it starts to get those typical mirror issues.

My mirrors always go weird and wonky out of nowhere. I set everything just so and then I hear them whirring and clicking and the mirror starts going back and forth and then trying to turn itself too far in one direction so it sputters and twitches. It's been like that for years
it stinks because it can happen when I'm driving which is dangerous I think. Mostly it has only happened when I am stationary and I haven't figured out the trigger. The car has "lived" in Canada (freezing cold) and in Texas (boiling hot) and does it in both locations. Meh

I have had my 07 Type S for about a month now (got it with 27,000 miles) and I have noticed that my mirror will never tilt down when I go in reverse. However, when I shift out of reverse the mirror will tilt up and I will have to re-adjust it. It doesn't make any clicking noises or jittery movements and has no problems going down if I move it manually with the button. It doesn't really bother me that it doesn't go down automatically but it sure is annoying when I look over to merge and see nothing but the sky. I guess I'll try popping the mirror off and make sure everything has a good connection and that its greased up well. My parents 05 TL with 160k miles doesn't have any problems with the mirrors.
