Loud Trans SHIFTING NOISE when going into REVERSE!!???
another thread from me being a semi new tl type s owner lol
my 07 tl type s sometimes makes a noise that sounds terrible when going into reverse
car completely stopped foot on brake no matter if going from park to reverse or a drive gear to reverse it just sounds terrible
its a loud click noise and just doesnt sound healthy and makes me worry sometimes
i try to do the change slow and as easy as possible
ANYONE else have this sound/"problem"
or is it normal?
trans fluid just recently change
atfz1 used 10 qts 3x3
car has 59k

Is it a click or a grinding sound?
About the 2nd day that I had my TL I would hear grinding sounds when I was backing out. Third day the car wouldn't shift into reverse at all and just kept making the sound. Took it in on Monday and sure enough the tranny went out with less than 300 miles on the odometer.

Clunk noise on transmission
For the past 2 weeks I've been having the same problem, I have the 05 Tl and when I put the car in reverse it makes that clunk noise. I took it to get checked out there saying it's an internal problem the mechanic said he can fix it for me for 1700$ idk what to do, idk if it's a sensor or what. I already had my transmission mounts changed.

mine does that too but i only notice it when i park on a slope. what i have done and actually minimizes this clunk, is this:
pull up to my drive-way (on a slope)
hold the brake pedal
pull the hand brake
slowly release the brake pedal( not all the way) when you feel the car roll back a bit then shift into park.
i believe this puts some force on the parking brake and a lot less stress on the tranny.
when i go to turn it on:
press brake pedal
shift to R (still holding brake pedal all the way down)
then release parking brake
the noise is almost eliminated when i do this.
it may sound wierd but i have done this with many vehicles since my drive way is a steep slope and it has now become a habit. dont know if it actually helps but i know for a fact it can not harm anything. try it OP

Yea 1700$ to fix it they said the tranny is going bad, I haven't dropped it off I'm trying to get more info b4 I spend that kind of $$, it's really annoying when I hear that clunk noise when I put the car in reverse.

i have an 07 type s auto and mine makes the same noise, its still under the acura certified warranty but i just keep putting off taking it in and getting it looked at. the closest acura dealer to me is like 100 miles away... i cant get mine to make the noise all the time and its aggravating... once it does it all the time, ill definately take it in..

for those with auto's use the ebrake when parking (regardless of when you are on a hill). Follow this procedure (overtime it will become second nature):
1. Come to a stop
2. Foot still on the brake, pull the ebrake
3. Put into neutral (N) and release foot brake. If the car rolls, pull harder on the ebrake until the car does not roll
4. Put in to park
Starting up and moving the car:
1. Start car and put foot on brake
2. Put in to Reverse or Drive
3. Release ebrake
4. GO

My 05 auto has the clunk shifting into reverse as well. Started the car up this morning and shifted in the reverse.. 'CLUNK'..and the car felt like it spazzed for a second. Put into D and it was smooth, shift back into R ..'CLUNK' and spazz. From P to R and from D to R, I was hearing that CLUNK sound. Really wondering what is the cause of this, I had the front and rear mounts replaced not too long ago. Planning to change out the switches asap and hoping it will eliminate this. If any members have any further knowledge of what is causing this 'CLUNK' shifting into Reverse, please chime in! Thankss!

The clunk is from a faulty third gear pressure switch. The tranny momentarily shifts into third before going into reverse or drive. The fix is cheap and easy - check the DIYs in the 3G garage.

I did this about 10k miles ago is it possible it already went bad? I also have a hard shift from 1 -> 2 dont think the pressure switch would affect that but it could, I have tried everything else, dunno if it would be worth it to try replacing the switch again, or maybe the tranny is just on the way out and should be left alone to die.

The clunk could be from worn CV joints, mounts or internals. If you have done the 3rd gear pressure switch and changed the fluid recently, then check the axles and mounts.

which cannot be true because I changed all the mounts myself not too long ago. It's a distinctive clunk that happens as the reverse gear is engaged, I'm 100% sure its from the transmission, I just always thought it's normal. However according to a few posts above, it may be the 3rd gear switch going bad? I may changed out my pressure switches soon, I've got 20k+ miles on these switches already

My 06 tranny craoked @100k miles. Went to the dealer and they wanted $4k to do a rebuild but my buddy knew a guy who rebuild mine for $1500. My symptoms started with me backing out from the driveway in the morning and when I put it in drive, it wouldn't engage right away and slow it got worse to there the clutches wouldn't engage anymore.
After getting my car back, I notice in lower gear it doesn't shift smoothly but in 4th and 5th its smooth where I can't tell if the car shifts unless I look at the rpm gauge.
I still hear and feel the transmission shifting noise when putting it in reverse. Must me a common thing with these cars???

Most quality disk brake pads have “warning tabs” that make a high frequency squealing sound when the pads get down to 2/32″ (about 10%) remaining to warn they need replacement. This warning sound is a loud loud sound when your car is in reverse.

Mine only started after replacing the shift position sensor (this is not the official name I forget what it is exactly). Long story short I was getting flashing D on a 2007 code reading this sensor in error. Now I get a true click. Not a clunk or a grind but a loud plastic click. Time to take the wheel and plastic guard off and see what's what.
