Loud rattling and poor power steering when cold
Loud rattling and poor power steering when cold
Here in Houston its in the 30s and 40s in the morning and my car has started making some noises. There is alot of noise coming from the accessory side of the engine on cold start up only in the morning. The steering wheel is hard to turn and i hear the belt squeal when I turn it. The sound at idle is not squealing like a slipping belt but a rattling noise. By the time I got to work my car was warmed up and of course it stopped.
I am not sure if my car is affected by the P/S o ring recall thing or not. I was thinking of just replacing the belt and if that doesn't help, replacing the tensioner. I am still under my powertrain CPO warranty. Do you think these problems would be covered? I did a search and found one guy who said he replaced his tensioner and it helped.... but I was hoping one of you guys have a definitive answer or similar situation before I start changing parts. Thanks.

Well upon closer inspection it was coming from the power steering pump... I replaced the return hose o-ring with the DIY on this forum. Fixed the problem with a 77 cent o ring from the dealer! Acurazine FTW!
like I said before, the power steering pump will go soon. the O ring you did is the most common one and makes noise first, however soon you will see fluid seeking from the bottom of the pump. its pretty much a guarantee once you hit about 100k miles.
since yours may or may not be leaking yet, just keep a close eye on it, sometimes its not easily apparent unless you look for it.
