Leather Cracking/Flaking

Hey guys my 2008 TL has a spot on the driver and passenger seat thats starting to crack/flake. Looks like the previous owner did not condition the seats well, I just got the car last month and am the second owner of the car, its got 28,000 miles on it. Heres a pic... its just one area on the edge of each driver and passenger seat. What can I do to fix this???

Mine is starting to show the same wear as well...Though my dealership is a PITA to deal with. They don't like to do anything under warranty...I have to haggle with them left and right to get it done.

I'll run this by them...

Sadly, most dealers won't cover it under warranty. They will claim it's normal wear and tear. The reality is the leather quality in the TL is horrible. My TL-S has 28k miles on it to, and the drivers seat looks like shit. I condition it often to, since it was brand new, and it didn't seem to make much difference. The leather is just poor quality.

hey..that member was me.

I have an 07 and i took it to a dealer and told them that i felt the leather was much too worn for the mileage: 38000km. They replaced it under warranty.. but also, they were aware that this was my 10th Acura since 1999.

BUT.. get this... i decide to put the car up for sale and some bastard shows up..sits on the BRAND NEW seat and..bam.. scratches the center portion of it..MY LUCK!!!

SO.. i'm pursuing a replacement of the seat.. dealer quoted me $400+tax cdn installed..and i'm getting it done. I could probably live with the scratch but for me to enter my car ..looking at that scratch..and it reminding me of the dumbass who scratched it would anger me too much.

I would definitely pursue the warrenty. If you cant get anything done with that you could get that section cut out and a new piece sewn in, cost me about $100 for a section of leather in my suburban.

My dealer replaced the driver's side leather. I have an 07 AT, it had only 15k miles. They took the cushion out and sent it to the upholsterer to have it fixed. They had to order the cover first.

Sheepskin seat covers will cover it.
There are no cleaners that really repair damage.
But some leather repair people do good w spray leather.
They is a guy that shows pics of such in mdx form.
The issue is color texture matching.
Warranty always is your first option.

Thanks guys, definitely going to try the warranty route this weekend and see what they say.

My TL is certified pre owend, so i dunno if having the little extra warranty would help or not but going to try nonetheless

well i took the car to an acura delaer today (not my home dealer) for three things, the leather being one of them. The service guy basically told me it was from the seat belt and that there was nothing he could do about that... which i think is total BS. Im rolling in a loaner for the time being, when i get my TL back tomorrow, im going to take it the dealer where I bought the car the end of december. I figure I might have better luck going back to where I bought the car and speak to the sales guy who sold me the car.

Leather in our cars is not very good. In another thread, a member some knowledge of the matter, indicated it is a hi-tech colored coating applied over a very thin leather. The simple act of sitting in the seats causes creases-and where there are creases the coating cracks.

Replacing the seat covers with the Acura covers-means this will recurr in time. Good if you can get them to do it under warranty-no so good if you have to pay.

There are places that can refinish the seat for you (basically they air brush computer matched color finish on your seat). You can google "leather refinishing" in your area and find a number of shops that specialize in this. Best option is to find a shop that specialized in automotive rather than funiture. Some can even come to your house (mobil service).

Leather Conditioners/Repair

What is a good leather conditioner for the leather material?

And I was wondering on average how much leather repair/refinishing cost?

the acura dealer i bought my car from has contracts with certain independant companies that do work for them such as leather repair, dent removal, ect... i think all acura dealers have these contracts???

but anyway, on my receipt the labor rate was $109.90 but it doesn't say anything about the length of time it took to repair.

Lexol brands are good, I've used this on most cars without problems. I've tried it on the TL but for some reason it makes me feel stuck to my seat as if I cant freely slide around.

I used this in my TL and I really like it, it looks like aloe lotion when you squirt it out and makes your seats really smooth.
