Hi.

Recently, i took my 05 base tl to get the timing belt service done as well as spark plugs and valve cover gaskets. After driving for a day a CEL came on. Turned out to be knock sensor bank 1. I'm assuming the mechanic damaged the sensor while doing the repairs mentioned, so I took it back to the shop and of course he denied accountability and wanted to charge me almost $500 to replace it.

Question is, is my assumption valid? I've read throughout this forum about how that cel will come on if the wiring gets pinched or even chewed but i don't have a rodent or pest problem and i never had a cel with this code before the vehicle service.

Is it possible to get to the sensor and wire via removing the ps pump instead of tb removal? I see comments on this but not a write up.

Yeah, that service he performed, IMHO, is not likely to come close enough to 'damage' the knock sensor.
Keep in mind, you have an almost 20 year old car & sensors get old & wear out.
With that said, #8 gives an idea as to where the knock sensor lives.

According to the FSM, to get to it the intake manifold & injector base needs to be removed then you have the cost of the sensor, which is $52.
Preferably, you'd want to get the OEM sensor because it is best.

Agreed, no need for removal of timing belt, but definite removal of the intake manifold is required.


Are you sure it's the knock sensor and not the 02 sensor...? Bank 1 doesn't make sense, it looks like the knock sensor is only the block so it should not be differentiated on bank 1/2
