Jump in RPM without downshifting

Ok when im on the highway traveling around 60 or 70mph, i accelerate slightly and the rpms jump about 500 or so rpm like it downshifted to 4th but it didnt becuase i have it on sportshift mode and it says i am still in 5th and if i do downshift it, it goes to 4th and the rpm jumps another 500 rpm up. So what is this first jump in rpms. Is it something to do with the torque converter? Someone explain this to me.

I have a AT tranny btw

I've wondered the same thing. I'm guessing it's the torque converter allowing a little slip before it locks. It almost sounds like a downshift.

Yup i thought it was a downshift until i switch it to sportshift mode and it says 5th. Maybe its the torque converter unlocking???

I think it is the tranny going from a locked mode (lockup) to a "slippage" mode where the torque converter comes into play. Just a W.A.G.

I have an MT but but I've driven many other AT cars (Wife's Honda Odyssey mainly) and I always thought the same thing.

Definately sounds like the torque converter unlocking to allow more accelleration w/o a downshift.

Long live the 6MT!

I believe 5th gear in our AT's does not compltely lock at all.... only 1-4th does.

And if you are seeing this on your gauge, you should downshift to 4th because I find slipping in 5th wastes more gas than locked in 4th.

I thought it was the other way around, 1st and 2nd do not lock up, all the rest do.
I think its in the owners manual...

The tech info in the garage section says the top 4 gears have the lockup.

I recomend reading about the transmission in the:

http://hondanews.com/CatID3014?mid=2...57629&mime=asc

That might explain what the trans is doing...
