Intermittent engine sputter
Intermittent engine sputter
Here's a good for you guys...
I have a supercharged 2004 6MT Acura TL, J32a3 stock internals, RDX injectors, Aeromotive fuel pump, catback, jpipe (deletes 3rd cat), PCDs, tuned on 93 octane.
I've been experiencing this issue about 2 months ago after I changed all intake gaskets and injector o-rings (though this may be irrelevant). It seems to be some intermittent fueling issue. The car sounds cammed at idle and sputters throughout the rpms.
AFR is jumping erratically from 14-16 at idle and 15-22 when I give it some gas. As a result, short term fuel trim is also erratic and jumps upwards to double digits at times.
There is no CEL, but I'm running Hondata FlashPro and for the 2004-2006 TL it requires to suppress certain codes. (Swapped ECU from an 07 AT)
This occurrence is very random and "fixes" itself sometimes when I give it some gas, followed by a loud backfire, or even when the car is just idling.
So far I've checked the following:
- Spark Plugs
- Ignition Coils
- Injectors
- IAT sensor
- MAP sensor
What I haven't checked yet:
- 02 sensors
- Fuel Pump (although its only 4 months old)
- Fuel Pressure Regulator
- Fuel Filter
Anyone have any input before I start replacing everything?

He posted this on the FB group page aswell. Where is @gerzand? No worries, he will stand behind his product and see if that issue had anything to do with the kit he sold.
Welcome to Gerzy Bear Performance customer service.
Just like He did last week to a customer from Seattle who had him PnP his intake manifold He sent him runners and a Maxbore nodded gasket. Received intake mani and no Maxbore gasket.

Regarding the issue I'm having though... I did talk to @gerzand about it when it first started happening and he was nice enough to help me troubleshoot my issue. I can't say that it's related at all to his rotrex kit that he sold me as the problem occurred AFTER I changed all intake gaskets and injector o-rings. Before then the TL was running perfect and pulling as it should.
I've also noticed that the AF ratio is sporadic in only Bank 1. Bank 2 AF ratio is perfect. At least this helps me narrow down where my problem is occurring. I have new upstream and downstream 02 sensors that should be arriving tomorrow. I plan to replace the sensors in Bank 1 and see if that fixes it... fingers crossed.
I also want to share that I've done a vacuum test and boost leak test and both showed no issues. I know that I mentioned I've only changed the gaskets and o-rings and didn't want anyone to think that I didn't start troubleshooting there.
However, I also want to add that I forgot to relieve the pressure in the fuel lines and when removing the injectors, sprayed gas all over the place... Could I have shorted something in Bank 1? I don't believe the issue is related to the fuel pump, fuel filter, or fuel pressure regulator, since only Bank 1 has the jumping A/F ratio.

A few other observations that I forgot to add... The problem occurs randomly regardless of engine temperature or driving conditions EXCEPT when decelerating. When decelerating, the engine sounds normal and has no sputtering/hesitations.
SOLVED: It ended up being my PnP injector adapters causing intermittent connections. Apparently this is a common issue and most would recommend to either re-pin the connector or solder the wires. My guess is that the frequent work I was doing to the car requiring me to unplug the injector clips along with the heat that the engine gives off caused the pin connection to expand and become loose overtime.
Hope this helps someone else down the road.
